The rain splashes against the windshield as she speeds down the slick road. Lightning brightens the dark sky. She glances back at her son, who stares back at his mother with fearful eyes. She looks back at the road, not wanting him to see her tears. She didn't want him to know that, she too, was scared.
She presses harder on the accelator, trying to put as much distance between them and that house as possible. That manor had done more than just rattle her. It had nearly taken her son, the only thing that she has left. Lightning flashes and suddenly, there's a man standing in the middle of the road.
She swerves, barely missing his leg. The car careens towards the ditch, but before she can turn the wheel, the car flips. The sound of crunching fills their ears as the car lands and rolls through the air. She closes her eyes and says a silent prayer, the whole time, her son's face flashes through her mind while his cries filled her ears.
Then the car stops and there is no sound.
