At lunch, i sat in between Hannah and Sarah, my other best friend.
"Guess why Kayley was late for class?" Hannah nudged Sarah's side.
"Why was she?"
"She was talking to Kool-aid kid!"
"No way."
I was closing my eyes out of frustration.
"So what if I was talking to him? He seems really nice."
"He's a loser Kayley." Hannah rolled her eyes. I glared at her.
"Ohh leave her alone Hannah, you know you would give absolutely anything to talk to him." Sarah said. We all laughed at her sarcasm. Hannah had had a grudge against him since she came to school wearing the same shirt as him. She didn't realize that her dad had gotten it from the guy's side of a store.
Jay walked by and I smiled at him. He gave me a shy smile back.
"Well he is cute... There could be potential."
I only caught the end of my friend's conversation.
"What?"
Hannah explained it to me."We were just talking about dates for the fall dance."
"Ohh."
"And we were saying that Aaron Black might ask you to it, because there's a rumour saying that he likes you."
"It's probably just a fake rumour." I insisted.
I looked over at the cool guys table. Aaron Black was one of Jetson Ryan's friends. Dark brown hair and blue eyes that were very attractive. All this in a 5'9 frame. He couldn't like me, we didn't even talk at all. That's when I caught him stealing glances at me. Or Hannah or Sarah. One of us anyways, it was impossible to determine who.
Then he winked at me. He had seen me looking at him. I turned around quickly, feeling my cheeks heat up.
"Kayden?" I turned to look at Jay who spoke my name quietly "Are you okay?"
He was worried.
"I'm fine." I smiled at him. He shrugged his shoulders and walked away.
"He just called you your brother's name." Hannah pointed out. Everyone thinks that I have an older brother named Kayden and something went wrong with the filing system and that our names got mixed up. When really, it's a cover up for my name that my dad made up, Kayley.I shrugged my shoulders. "Whatever."
The bell rang and I walked to my locker and got my books out for Science. As soon as I walked into the class, Miss Carol brought me to the side to talk to me."Kayley, you have the best science grades in the class." I nodded my head, Science was one of my favorite classes and I happened to be good at it.
"Would you mind tutoring a student from another class who is struggling?"
"I'd love to."
"Perfect, you can start right after school. You can use my class for two hours. And I will give you extra credit for this."
The bell rang to signal that the class started. I sat down in my seat and did the required work written on the board. Easy. I closed my work book and thought about who I would be tutoring.
----------------------------------------------
"Kayley."
I sat up quickly. I had fallen asleep in the middle of class and Sarah had called my name to wake me up before the teacher saw. I mouthed "Thanks" and looked at my History teacher who was leaning back in his chair and reading some novel about the second World War.The bell rang. I went to my locker, put my stuff away and headed to Science class. I had prepared what I was going to teach the student I was tutoring right before I fell asleep.
I walked into class to see a boy with green hair leaning against a wall and looking out the window.
"Jay?"
He turned his head to look at me.
"Hey."
I set my books down on the table and walked over to him.
"I'm your tutor."
He nodded his head and motionned to his books laying on the ground next to him. I wanted to ask if we should start when he spoke.
"Later. Just look out the window, relax for a little while. School just finished for the day and I'm not ready to start working again right away."
He spoke so quietly, it was comforting in a way. Like a break from the noisy world. And he had known that I was wondering if we should start, without me having to say anything.
"I think that's the most I have ever heard you say."
He laughed lowly and smiled a little.
"I like being quiet."
"I can tell."
I looked out the open window and noticed Jetson's gang hanging around on the basketball court.
"Yo Jameson."
Aaron was near the window, and was looking up at me as he said my last name.
"Yes Black?"
"What are you doing?"
"Tutoring."
"What class?"
"Science."
He nodded his head then went back to the basketball court with his friends.""Let's get started?" I had almost forgotten Jay was here. "Yeah."
