Chapter Nineteen:

Little Darcy has all kinds of cords and tubes and needles poking out of her all over. She’s not moving and her face is lifeless. This isn’t the beautiful Darcy I know, whenever she regains consciousness her green eyes aren’t full of life anymore, and neither are Harry’s. He’s been in distress ever since it happened he’s been muttering stuff like it was his fault for even talking to her when he knew she had problems or something like that.

 “Will she be able to walk again?” Harry asked, pleaded. every doctor and nurse that came even close to her is getting interrogated.

“We don’t know.” A doctor answered, looking at Darcy’s scans. “She’s broken her back but right now it’s hard to tell if she’ll be able to walk again, it might heal itself but she’s too young for surgery on such a vital part of her body.” The news hit me, and it hit me hard.

“What are the chances?” I asked, hoping to get good news, but that’s not always the case.

“There’s about thirty percent chance she will heal by herself.” I looked over to little Darcy, her rosy cheeks not so rosy and her smile non-existent.

“I’m so sorry,” Harry whispered to me, holding my hands in his. His eyes red from crying and they were pleading for forgiveness. “I’m sorry for talking to Victoria, for saying those horrible things, for not being there to help sooner, for not being here for you in general.” Harry blurted out, and I can tell he really means what he’s saying.

“You don’t need to be sorry.” I whispered, pulling him in for a hug which is something I really need right now.

“I need you in my life Abby, please don’t ever leave me again.” He sniffed, this brought a tear to my eye. I’m not even sure if it’s a happy tear or a sad one for Darcy but together Harry and I can make it through this, we need each other.

“I need you too Harry, but there’s one rule.” I agreed, nuzzling my head into his neck.

“Anything.” He whispered back, kissing my head.

“I get you all to myself.”

“Always.” He smiled, pulling away to kiss me on the forehead.

“I love you so much, and I will forever and always.” I smiled, wiping away his stray tear.

“I wanted to say that first!”

“We’ve said it before sweet heart.” I laughed, holding his hands.

“I thought we were starting new? Like it never happened?”

“What happened?” I asked, flinging my hands around his neck and pulled him into a kiss, not just a normal peck. But a full passionate kiss, and for a second everything was okay. For a second, there were no problems and the world was perfect.

“Mummy? Daddy?” Darcy whimpered quietly from her little bed.

“Yes darling, we’re here.” I answered and we raced over to her side.

“Do you feel any pain pumpkin?” Harry asked, holding her little hand in his.

“I feel nothing.” That broke my heart, she’s so little and precious and she has no idea what’s happened to her, how are we going to tell her? “Are you two happy again?” She asked, her eyes lightening up a little.

“Yes pumpkin, we’re happy.” Harry forced a smile.

“Kiss mummy!” Darcy smiled, clapping and Harry gave me a peck on the lips and she giggled a little, and it was the most beautiful sound I have ever heard.

“Have you called Louis yet?” I asked Harry, and he almost jumped out of his skin running for his phone.

“Miss?” A man asked and I turned around to see a doctor walk in with his clip board.

“Yes?” I answered, standing up to talk to him.

“We’ve examined Darcy’s condition further and we’ve found that if we do surgery now we’ll be able to fix it all up with some luck, but without the surgery it’s most likely she’ll never walk again.

“Then we’ll do the surgery!”

“Miss, it’s a pricey procedure.” He warned.

“What’s pricey?” Harry asked, walking back in from the call.

“The procedure that Darcy needs to walk.” I explained.

“It’s pricey.” The doctor repeated.

“Money isn’t a problem.” Harry explained.

“Oh, you’re that boy from that band! Of course it’s not a problem. We’ll do the procedure tomorrow then.” The doctor suddenly clicked to reality.

“Yes. So do whatever you need.” Harry agreed and the doctor left.

“What did Louis say?” I asked.

“He’s getting the others and they’re on their way.” He smiled, kissing me on the forehead. “Oh and your mum too.” He added.

The whole crew showed up and pretty much everyone had something to give to Darcy, like a card or balloons or a toy, Louis was going to give her lollies but I stopped him before she could see them because she can’t eat before the surgery, and he looked more upset than she would have. Now I’ll look bad! He complained. She’ll still love you all the same.

~~~
“I can’t stand seeing her like this.” I whispered. Looking at little Darcy all drugged up on her stomach cords going in every direction. The nurses came and wheeled her away and then she was gone.
“Harry look!” I called down the hall as I watched Darcy take her first steps right before my eyes.
“What?” He answered, and I could hear his feet come up the hall.
“Darcy is walking!” I called excitedly as she stumbled her way over to me on the couch.
“Oh my God!” Harry clapped. “Isn’t our little Darcy such a good girl?!” Harry said congratulating Darcy who was now on my lap looking pretty happy with herself.
The thought of her never walking again threw me and the thought of us going through her first steps again made me yearn for the success of this operation ever more. All I want is for everything to go back to normal.
The next few hours were the longest of my life. Harry was pacing up and down the plain hospital corridor of depression, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. Everyone in this area was sick and hurt and there were people screaming in pain down the hall. Nurses scampering past like mice trying not to be seen.
“Come sit down.” I suggested to Harry, and he obeyed sitting in the chair next to me and I got up and sat on his lap. He snaked his arms around my waist and pulled me in tight, resting his head on my back. Everything seemed to be going in slow motion, everyone’s steps took a little longer and every beep of the machines took a little bit longer to come around. I felt sick in the stomach with guilt and concern. Finally the doctor exited the surgery and we both stood up simultaneously.
“How did it go?” Harry asked, and the doctor didn’t look like the news he had was all that good.
