Everyone in Maree's life who she's shown kindness to always takes that kindness as her weakness and break her down, break her bubblegum heart, popping it before swallowing and sucking all the sweetness of it.
Maree's mother did it to her, her step-father Kraig did it, Victor did it, they all took a piece of her heart and smashed the piece that they had until she had no heart until it was just a tiny piece that she had left. Maree had spent all of her life protecting her brothers and making sure that they had a better life than she had. She made sure she gave them love when no one else would when their father disappeared when their mother had stopped caring.
For a while, Maree wished she had a different mother, she wished that it was just her father and her brothers, she wished she wouldn't have been so selfless since all it did was hurt her. Maree seemed to have only given kindness to her demons, to her monsters but they seem to completely devour the small number of good memories she had. All the pain and the torment that she suffered by the hands of her step-father was something she doesn't regret if it wasn't for that night, she wouldn't be seeing them behind bars.
Maree remembers the nights where she would see her father, crying onto the pile of bills he had, she would always bring him a blanket and warm milk as she read her stories to him as he would fall into a deep sleep. She would take on the role of mother, maid, and therapist but she didn't mind as her father had fallen into a deep depression that her mother left him in.
