A little along the way, I had my own place and a job that could help me survive in this realm. I took up an alter ego of Ada Carter, the younger sister of Mitch Carter, and cousin of Arthur and Athena Pappas. It took me a while to adjust and get used to this new name and routine. We were told not to use our powers. Things worked differently back on Olympias. I was only a teenager in this world so I was sent to senior education at Light National High School. It held a massive hall with lockers side by side among the walls and too many people to suit my needs of personal space. Athena and I were in it together but we had entirely different classes meaning we would only see each other during break times. This wasn't anything like home. My first ever lesson was hell.
"We have a new student with us today," the man up front announced. "Her name is Ada Carter. Do you want to tell us anything about yourself?"
I don't like being put on the spot. I don't like you or any of these people. What would be appropriate for this situation?
"Not really," I quickly decided to get everyone's attention away from me. I don't need that kind of drama in my life.
The man went on with the long double as I tried my best to pay attention. It was a struggle to sit there in one spot as I consistently fidgeted around in the uncomfortable desk chair.
"You alright, there?" this cute guy next to me asked. He had this large L painted on his jacket like he belonged to some cult.
"Yeah, I just can't sit in these things," I informed.
"Were you homeschooled?" he questioned.
"Yeah, that seems like the best way to put it."
"Fair enough," he smiled. "I'm Jack by the way."
"It's nice to meet you, Jack."
He smiled again as he went back to his notebook and looked back at some of his friends who also wore the same jacket.
A loud bell rang through my ears as everyone packed up while I tried to restrain myself from placing my hands over them.
It was the first break of the day and I didn't know what to do. The yellow sun shone into my eyes as I blinked a few times until I spotted Jack with his friends. I didn't want to impose on him but I hadn't been able to find Athena anywhere. How do you even get to know someone that you don't know? Is that how you make friends? Because I have no clue how to do that. I've never had to worry about it until now.
"Ada!" someone called my name.
It was the girl that sat next to Jack. She was the girl that sat on the other side of Jack. I never caught her name.
I walked up and asked, "Weren't you in my class before?"
"Yeah, we all have History together," she pointed out.
The others were also from the class.
"I'm Danni," she introduced, "and this is James and Ally."
"Danni and Ally short for anything?" I wondered.
"Alicia," the other girl responded.
"Mine's Danniella, but everyone calls me Danni."
"Take a seat, Ada," Jack insisted.
I stayed with them until the next bell rang. They agreed to see me at lunchtime so I guessed that was a success. Maybe I wasn't so bad at making friends? I don't know. I would have stood there like a freak if Danni hadn't called me out. She actually did me a favor.
On the way back to class, I saw Supergirl zoom pass in the sky. My eyes followed her as she disappeared behind the city high buildings. Smoke clouded the air as I watched her blow out the flames and rescue the people inside.
