Doing Big Things
Quickly arriving to the diner, I ran frantically from my car to the building, nearly falling on my way through the door. "I'm so sorry I'm late, traffic was terrible." I say apologizing.
"It's fine" my boss begins. "Just grab an apron, were packed." she smiles.
"Thanks, Margret." I smile.
The first day of my new job was tough and very busy, to say the least. But, none the less, I enjoyed it.
"Wanna go get food after this?" Danielle asked as we cleaned off all the tables and booths.
"Oh gosh, I don't know, Danielle. Its awful late.." I say checking the time, 11:08pm.
"Oh come on, eve!" She rolled her eyes. "Don't be such a stick in the mud."
"Well, when you put it like that." I say thinking.
"Like what?" She asked confused.
"Insulting me." I laugh. "Fine."
She smiled appreciatively. "Than it's settled, Where are we going?"
About fifteen minutes later we pulled into the small parking lot neck to the small hot dog stand.
"Here?" she said in disgust.
"Yes!" I said happily walking toward the small buildings window. Sams hot dog stand has been my favorite place to grab a burger or fries or anything that screams "American Obesity" since I moved here for college. I loved it like fish love water -meaning, to me it was nothing short of a necessity.
Walking up to the stand, I quickly grabbed my wallet out of my pocket. I'm not really much of a purse gal, myself. Standing at the small window where they serve the food I noticed something off. Is that a new guy working in there? He looks familiar. And as he slowly turned around to face me, more and more of him seemed oh so familiar. "Oh, what the fuck." I said in shock. It was Adam.
"Hey, Ivy!" He smiled with anticipation.
"Uhh, hey Adam." I smiled sheepishly.
"What would you like?" He asked.
"A reason as to why you're working at Sams would suffice." I mumbled.
"Oh, Well, with college bills and everything, I thought it'd be nice to get a fall job."
"Here?" I pointed to the ground.
"Haha, yeah. Why not?" He asked.
"Oh I don't know, it's just weird seeing you here, after all this time."
Sam was a boy I dated my senior year of high school. We grew up as neighbors when we were kids. I can still remember going to his house every day after school and playing video games. We use to go on little dates all the time and I remember going to Sams hot dog stand all the time with him. The town I moved to was only 45 minutes away from my old home but still, it was kinda sweet to go a whole town over just for a good hot dog or burger.
Looking at him now he looked kinda different from when we were in high school. His jaw line was much sharper and his eyes much deeper green. They were a glimmering emerald color, deep and gorgeous. Hi lips were more plump and his freckles seemed to have disappeared, more than likely from it being autumn. Jesus, how long has it been since we've talked?
After ordering our food, I attempted to leave swiftly, however adam stopped me abruptly. "Hey, um, would it be possible to get your number? I mean just to keep in contact?" jesus.
"Uh, I guess so." And that's that.
Later that night, I was home and got a text from Adam. We ended up talking about how college was going for us. Turns out Adam decided to switch college pathways. He told me about his dreams of becoming a journalist. I thought it was kinda interesting. He was growing to become a better guy. Before, he didn't really care what career he ended up with, so this was different, to say the least. Seemed like he was doing big things.
He seemed to genuinely just want to talk to me, no third party ideas or plans. He just wanted to reconnect and become friends, see what's been up with me. It was a breath of fresh air. I appreciated it -it was new. I ended up inviting him to the Halloween party. He said he probably wouldn't be able to make it, but that he appreciated the invite.
