I grabbed a plate heaping with pizza, cookies, cupcakes, and any other junk food you could imagine, and headed over to Adelaide and the triplets. They were sitting in our usual spot on the cushy, blue couches and chairs on the far South side of the courtyard.

Adelaide seemed to be talking the triplets ears off about new fashion trends or how annoyed she was at the some of the girls and her private school. Despite the boring topic of conversation the Zipe triplets didn't seem to mind. It was a well-known fact that Adelaide was the prettiest girl in 6th grade, not that I had ever thought of her that way. We had known each other since age 8, when Adelaide moved to the North American chapter. Because we were the only kids their age who lived at EAS we had become friends quickly. As I plopped down on one of the chairs, Adelaide abandoned her conversation with the triplets,

"Chase!" She exclaimed, "Where have you been all afternoon? "I replied flatly, "I was in the training court practicing some of the new moves Hansel taught us. "Luckily, I knew how to lie with a straight face, because I had not in fact been in the training courts, but instead I had been hiding from Adelaide and her constant need for attention. But she didn't need to know that. It's not that I didn't like hanging out with her, it's just, well recently she had been following me around to the point where I couldn't stand it. And it wasn't even the fact that she always wanted to be with me it was how she acted when she was around me. Constant sighing, staring at me, and twirling her hair. The triplets seem pretty certain that she likes me but-

"Chase? Did you hear what I said?" Adelaide interrupted my thoughts, with her questions. She and the triplets were staring at me, but I had no idea what they had been talking about, I sort of zoned out when Adelaide started taking about some random story about her day at school. Adelaide, probably seeing the blank expression on my face, said,

"Your dad's coming back this weekend, right?" Oh that. I had almost managed to put it out of my mind but now the lump in my throat had returned. I replied,

"Actually, he can't come this week. Gifford the Grey was spotted in Atlantis a few days ago, so the Cannon sent my dad on a mission to find him. He shouldn't be gone for that long; I mean how hard is it to spot a 50-foot-tall giant?" I let out a fake sounding laugh and planted a smirk on my face. It was silent for a minute, while they all gave me pitying glances. I hated it when people felt sorry for me, and they shouldn't. I mean it wasn't that big a deal that my dad wasn't coming home this week. He had stayed away longer than this before, I was used to being alone. Conner interrupted the awkward silence,

"That's way cool man. I heard Gifford the Grey made Mount Sumpter crumble to the ground with just a stomp of his foot." Kyle chipped in with his own story,

"I heard he swallowed an entire army of trolls, so he didn't even have to lift a finger to fight them."

"Ewe. That's disgusting," Adelaide replied looked at Kyle with her nose crinkled. Glad that the awkward situation had passed, I continued to wolf down my plate of food. All the sudden a high-pitched bell rang, and the director marched out of her office toward the tree of hope. She stood on a pedestal about 10 feet from the tree. She cleared her voice, and pronounced,

"Everyone gather round," in such a loud voice that I wouldn't be surprised if people miles away could here. Not that she needed to be loud, the bell had already got the attention of everyone in the courtyard. As we marched over to the tree, Conner wondered out loud,

"What do you think this is about?"

"Maybe, we're going to go to Yondel!!! Apparently, some ice griffins got loose and are terrorizing the residents there," Kyle exclaimed excitedly. All 5 of us sat down at the base of the tree of hope, near where the only other 6th grader, Lena was sitting, her Adelaide rolled her eyes and said,
