In Which Ignorance is Bliss (and leads to happy endings)

"Have you had any professional training? What is your vocal range? Can we please be best friends?" Tiffany hears Taeyeon sing, and doesn't realize she's falling in love.

The fact that Tiffany loved singing surprised far less people than the fact that she was studying to be a medical doctor.

Her big smiles and charming Valley girl personality threw people off the whole I'm-actually-kind-of-a-genius trail, even in Korea apparently (though her heavily accented Korean probably didn't help).

But that's how it was: Tiffany was in her first year of studying pre-medicine as an international student in Korea, and she really loved music.

Like, really loved music.

The fall semester had only been in session a few weeks and Tiffany had already spent way too many hours buried under books in the library.

Which is why Tiffany found herself here, spending almost every moment of the short Chuseok break in the music building, singing like her life depended on it.

Because most students either went home or on a holiday during the break, the halls were scarce of people and Tiffany found herself loving the breathing space.

Tiffany was itching to get into the practice room she'd booked for the day, but as she passed a room with the door slightly ajar she was stopped dead in her tracks.

Who is that?

She softly placed her hand on the door handle and leaned in to listen to the angelic voice flowing from the room. The girl inside was singing beautifully. Actually, she wasn't just singing, she seemed to be pouring her entire being into the melody she was producing.

Wo-ow.

Tiffany was impressed.

Her mouth fell open slightly when the woman increased the emotion in her voice as the ballad reached its climax.

Tiffany was very impressed.

Completely forgetting about things like, common courtesy, privacy and generally how-not-to-be-a-creeper, Tiffany pulled the door open further and stepped inside the square room.

The girl with the enthralling voice was sitting in front of a piano, eyes closed, fingers ghosting over keys but never pushing down. She seemed completely in her own world.

Tiffany was entranced.

The young woman was a lot smaller than Tiffany had been expecting, but everything else about her fit the image she had conjured up in her head. She had light brown hair, flowing down to her shoulders and she was beautiful. Stunning.

Tiffany could tell she was developing a talent-crush on the girl, but how could anyone not?

When the singer ended her melody on a soft note, Tiffany felt a grin appear on her lips and brought her hands together loudly in applause.

The woman snapped her eyes open abruptly and turned to face Tiffany, obviously shocked at having an audience.

She looked nervous.

For anyone else, it would have been awkward, but Tiffany had never been in an awkward situation in her life, so it definitely wasn't.

Still grinning and applauding, she explained, "The door was open and when I heard you singing, I just had to come and get a better listen."

The girl in front of her didn't respond, didn't change her expression at all, so Tiffany continued, "You're like, really good. I mean, I know that if you're studying music at university you're bound to be good, but you're like, really really good. I definitely think you could be famous one day," she gushed.

At that, the girl shifted slightly, a small smile that Tiffany couldn't quite place presented itself on her face.

"Thank you, that's very kind," she said diplomatically.

Tiffany took a step forward, further into the room, her right hand held out far in front of her.

"I'm Tiffany Hwang," she introduced, "First year pre-med and international student from The States."

She thought she could see a flash of understanding suddenly appear in the girl's eyes, but couldn't fathom why. She brushed the thought away.

The woman hesitantly rose from her position on the piano bench and clasped Tiffany's hand lightly, "I'm Taeyeon. I do music," is all she offered in reply.

Tiffany smiled, her eyes curving upwards; that was all she needed.

Tiffany could have kept a conversation going with Taeyeon for hours (Have you had any professional training? What is your vocal range? Can we please be best friends?), but she felt that Taeyeon had a lot more practicing that she wanted to do, and technically, Tiffany did have her own room waiting for her, so after a few minutes, a big smile, and an It was really really nice to meet you! she bowed low and left.

But that's not to say that the very next day, when she walked down the same empty hallway and heard the same heavenly voice escaping very quietly through a wall of the soundproof room, she just passed by.

She would not be Tiffany Hwang if she had done that.

Oh no.

With little to no hesitance Tiffany grasped the handle, opened the door quietly, and stepped into the room.

Taeyeon was, once again, sitting at the piano bench with sheets of music strewn messily all around her. However this time she was actually playing the instrument in front of her, releasing even more magic into the atmosphere as her fingers caressed the keys.

Tiffany leaned back against the wall, closed her eyes and lost herself in Taeyeon's song.

When the sound abruptly cut off, Tiffany jerked out of her trance.

Taeyeon was looking at her curiously, her fingers frozen over the piano keys.

Tiffany beamed, "Morning Taeyeon! I heard you singing again as I walked by and was wondering if maybe you wanted some breakfast. I brought too much food this morning."

She searched through her backpack and pulled out a ham sandwich and two granola bars (she'd stocked up on her favorites before leaving the States), and handed them to a dubious looking Taeyeon.

Tiffany frowned slightly, "I know it's not what you'd normally eat in the morning, but I still haven't gotten used to Korean food yet..."

"No." Taeyeon said suddenly, a small smile on her face, "No, it's fine. If you'd like I could also share mine with you?"

Tiffany's megawatt smile was back in seconds, "I'd love that!"

Once the two of them had exchanged and eaten their food, Tiffany had left – she wanted to befriend the girl with the amazing voice, not scare her off and have her run for the hills.

She would take things slow.

But the next day when she walked deliberately slowly past all the practice rooms and found no trace of Taeyeon, she couldn't help but be disappointed.

The day following was exactly the same.

At least, until it wasn't.

Tiffany had been practicing for almost two hours when she finished singing a particularly powerful, popular American ballad.

As the last notes of her voice faded into the air, she heard small claps coming from behind her.

She turned her head, the corners of her mouth already turned upwards, to see Taeyeon against the wall with a matching smile on her face.

"The tables have turned." Tiffany said with mock-darkness.

"You know, you're really good at singing, Tiffany."

A tinge of embarrassment sprung to Tiffany's cheeks, she scratched the back of her neck absentmindedly, "Me? It's just a hobby really. I mean, I'm no where as good as you – you're amazing!"

Taeyeon rolled her eyes and stepped forward to sift through the sheets of paper set out on the piano in front of Tiffany.

She grabbed one sheet and held it out to Tiffany; "I used to sing this in high school. I haven't heard it in so long," She said.

Tiffany glanced at the piece of paper, "Oh yeah! Boa's like my favorite Korean artist," she said, "I don't really know much Korean music."

Taeyeon looked at her with a half-smile on her face, "I know," she backtracked, "I mean, I could guess with all the American music there is..."

With a sudden grin on her face Tiffany exclaimed, "Do you wanna sing a duet with me?"

A pause.

"Okay"

Mere minutes later Taeyeon sat at the piano bench with Tiffany next to her, their voices tangling and bouncing off of each other's in time with the melody of the piano.

"Wow." Tiffany mumbled, once the tune had ended.

"Yeah, wow."
