The weeks that followed were cold and quiet even with his presence in the apartment. It seemed as he intended in avoiding me. He would be gone early in the morning before I stepped into the kitchen and come in late at night. It hurt me to say it, or even come close to admitting it, I missed him. His laugh, even his insufferable jokes. I wanted to talk to him again, about everything or nothing. Just to talk to him.
"Ms. Sterling" Greyson calls from his office, "do you mind stepping into my office,"
From the moment you open the door, his cologne is in the air. Not a slap in your face smell, but that of cleanness, as if he had just stepped out of your shower.
"Gobble," he says, in the most childlike manner
I can't help to laugh at the sight of his puffy cheeks. It's times like these that I wonder, how can he be the same person that only a few months ago had his fingers in me.
"Do you want me to get you a turkey sandwich?" I ask sarcastically,
He comes to his feet, "No—I'm fine. I wanted to make sure that all the vendors and guests have been checked for the Thanksgiving Dinner Gala for tomorrow. I don't want any surprises coming our way, during the festivities,"
"I have it all covered, Mr. Sacks,"
He smirks at that as if we were beyond last name basis. He draws closer to me, nearly pinning me against the file cabinet behind me. I can almost feel his fingers linger against the sides of my thighs. His voice lowers and softens. It's suggestive, to say the least. I tighten my fists, fighting the urge to kiss his lips.
"Miss Sterling, you're," he breathes heavily, as his lips curl into a smile, "in my way, I need that file behind you,"
"Right---Right," I feel the blood rush to my face as I fluster out of the way. I begin to run away since I can feel my body betraying me.
"Caroline, wear something classy tomorrow night," he pauses, "preferably black,"
I nod and rush out of there. I take a breath once back at my desk. My face feels hot and flushed with color.
"You okay?", my eyes widened from the sound of the voice coming from right in front of me.
A red-hot glow seeps into my cheeks in further embarrassment, and immediately drop my gaze to the keyboard. I can hear him laugh, trying to ease me up.
"I'm looking for Greyson. Is he busy, right now?", his deep blue eyes meet mine. I can almost see through him, just like me, he's a small fish lost in this big pond of a city. He shares the look, of a lost soul. His sandy blonde hair pulled back, and the tiny trimmed subtle beard highlights the sharpness of his jaw. Those pearly whites escape his lips, showing tiny indents in his cheeks.
"He's reviewing contracts, and doesn't want to be disturbed," I state firmly. I had been here for two weeks now and seen that men never took receptionist seriously. However, I wasn't about to be barked at because this handsome stranger wanted his 15 minutes with Greyson.
"I think he'll want to speak to me," He winks, flashing me a smile again.
"I think not," I smile sarcastically, "now if you don't mind, I need to finish tending to these invoices,"
He picks one up from my desk, I reach for it as he playfully pulls his arm back. His lips moving in a murmur as he reads the names.
"These are actually for the COO," he raises his brow, "not for Greyson,"
I take the invoice from his hand, "Well if he bothered to pick them up form the mail room, the mail clerk wouldn't pile them up on my tray,"
His eyes focused on mine, the corners of his lips fighting a smile, his eyebrows slightly raised. He whispers, "What an a-hole he must be!"
In a few seconds, that grin of his is on my face too, as I let my silence speak for itself. Greyson hands me a file from behind, "Jake! I didn't know you had gotten back. How were the Bahamas?"
My eyes widen as he finishes the sentence, "Jake—Goldbridge?" I ask slyly. As in the COO of the board? My stomach feels a tight knot, could it be possible to just bury myself right about now.
"Nothing but sunshine," he smiles. As he follows Greyson to the office, he turns around to face me, mouthing I'm the asshole.
