"Appa, why are we here? Where's Mommy?" Five year old Seoyeon asked, unaware of everything going on around her. The nurses that would occasionally come in and out, giving updates to her Appa. Her main attention had been on her dolly she held in her arms, but now she was starting to get hungry.
"We're here because Mommy's having a baby. Remember?" The five year old looked at her own dolly in her arms and sighed.
"How much longer?" She was completely oblivious to the stress on her Appa's face as she kicked her feet under her chair.
"Be patient, Seoyeon." Her Appa tightened the two, twin ponytails on either side of her head, and she scrunched her nose. Seoyeon had hoped he wouldn't have noticed how she kept inching the elastic hair ties away from her head. She would rather have her hair down, cascading over her shoulders. But her hair always got too tangled, so her Appa put it up this morning. That was right before they had to leave to come sit in the hospital.
"Mr. Choi, you and your daughter may come in now." Seoyeon jumped down from her seat and grabbed her Appa's hand. She knew the lady had come from where her Mother went, and she wanted her Mother.
"Mommy!" She cried as she let go of her Appa's hand and ran towards the tired lady. Seoyeon was about to climb onto the bed, but then she noticed her Mother seemed to be holding a baby doll. Except this one looked a lot more real.
"Hi, SeoSeo. Do you want to meet your baby brother?" She nodded her head, her ponytails bobbing alongside her. She wasn't sure what it was like to have a brother, but she most definitely wanted to see the baby doll in her Mother's arms.
Her Appa lifted her up onto the bed next to her Mother, and she gently looked at the baby in her arms. His eyes were gently closed, and he was completely swaddled in a blanket.
"This is Seungcheol." SeoSeo smiled and looked down at her own dolly to compare it to him.
"He looks too real to be a dolly, Mommy." Her parents laughed, and Seoyeon leaned closer. That was a lot of waiting just for a baby doll.
"He's not a doll, Seoyeon. He's your brother." Her Appa said, and the five year old gently poked him just to be sure. As science proved, he was indeed real.
"I'm a Noona now?" She looked up at her Mother with wide eyes, excited at all of the things she would be able to do with her brother. She wouldn't have to wait for her parents to play with her anymore, and they could do everything together.
"Yes, you are." Seoyeon smiled and looked back down at Seungcheol. She leaned forward and gave him a soft kiss on his forehead.
"I like him better than my dolly."
