Note: Marissa is an OC. This fanfic is a huge regret. I'm so sorry.

Prologue: There was no comfort when she dreamt about the disaster that had gotten her stuck in this little apartment with a loud neighbor on one side of her and thumping noises on the other. She laid in bed and trembled, feeling lonely. Nobody knew she existed anymore. Not that she wanted anyone to know she existed. She was fine in her own suffering. She rolled over and listened to her neighbor talking.

"...last week. I haven't heard much from her. But I feel I should go see her. You know. Maybe she's depressed and needs someone as a friend. I'll be right back- maybe to go get food and stuff, and I'll give you the full update later. I'll be back in a bit."

She felt slightly frightened as she heard him get up. She normally didn't want anyone coming into her apartment uninvited, but there was something in the Swede's voice that told her something she didn't recognize.

She answered the knock at the door, looking up into a pair of warm brown eyes. She felt her body warm up, and stepped back as he greeted her.

"Hey, man. I'd heard you'd moved in a few days back." He looked down at her. "My name's Joel. What's yours?"

"Marissa." She couldn't rip her eyes from him.

He tilted his head. "You look real lonely."

"I'm fine this way, thank you." She smiled up at him with a snarl in her voice.

"Okay, fine. Wow." Joel started to walk out, but Marissa didn't let him leave. She felt him jump slightly as she grabbed onto his arms.

"Please take me with you," she whispered. "I don't have anyone to talk to or have the reassurance that someone knows I exist."

"Of course." Joel looked away from her. "I'll make sure you still exist." He smiled at her, and she smiled back.

She shoved him playfully and closed the door behind him. He led her into his apartment, laying down on the bed with her.

"Oh, that's right. Hold on." Joel got up and plopped back into his chair, adjusting his headphones on his head. "I'm back," he said with singsong in his voice. "Apparently, she's just fine, but she's lonely-- oh, goddamnit, chat, would you shut up? I don't like any girls. I'm allowed to have female friends, too." He paused to drink from his soda. "Ugh. You're all fucks. That's what you are. You're fucks."

He paused, reading the bottom of the screen with slitted eyes, muttering words under his breath. "Aw, fuck off. I'm not going to go off stream and fuck a girl, man."

Marissa blushed, giggling.

"Plus, I've brought her in my apartment with me, so you have no.." He trailed off as the chat exploded. "..fuck you." He giggled, his laughter becoming louder and wilder.

Marissa loved the sound of his laughter. She listened to him talk every time she could with her ear pressed up against the wall. She'd imagined him different, not this cute Swedish guy who even sounded adorable when he said certain things.

"Fucking hell, guys, can we just talk about something else? What about anal fissure?" Joel giggled again, reading the chat. "You think I'm.. oh. Oh- okay. Real funny, man. Yeah. Okay. Guys, Uncle Jobel's gonna start banning people if they don't shut up."

"Here. Let me change the subject with this." Joel changed his voice so he sounded like Kermit the Frog. "Joel? Joel? What are you doing up at 2:04 AM sneaking women into your apartment? Joel?! Joel?!"
