I sighed and played on my phone, waiting for my mom, Karen to get back home. I wasn't feeling like I wanted to unpack anything, so I decided to relax until mom got home. I laughed, watching a GIF of the cartoon version of the Buddi doll hump an object. Then the door opened. "Y/n, you didn't unpack?" My mom questioned me, closing the door behind her. "No, I just wasn't feeling it." I tell her, still giggling at the GIF on my phone. I looked at her. "You look like shit." I tell her, turning back to my phone. "Thanks, and watch your language." She says sarcastically, and rolls her eyes. "So you decided to play on your phone the whole time?" She asks once again. "I mean, I'm supposed to get a new phone in three weeks, for my birthday, so I might as well try to wear this down even more." I tell her. "Well, Y/n, wouldn't you like to meet new people?" She asks, sitting down next to me. "No, not really. I have my phone, right?" I say, looking away from the screen to look at her. "Well, what's so important on that thing anyway?" She asks, smirking at me. "This is my prime source of knowledge! It's better than having friends, mom!" I tell her. "Well, let's see what's on that so called, 'prime source of knowledge'!" She says, snatching my phone out of my hand. "No! Mom!" I pleaded, but it was too late. She was looking at the GIF with an unamused facial expression. "I guess I'm going to be taking this." She says, putting it in her pocket with a smile. "Aw! Come on, mom!" I whined. "Well, I'll tell you what. If you at least attempt to make friends, You don't have to unpack today," she pauses. "And I'll give you your phone back." She says, holding up my phone. "Deal!" I exclaim, taking my phone out of her hand. "Alright, go out there, honey. I love you." She says, smiling at me. "Love you too." I say, smiling back at her. I dashed out of the room, and went down the stairs of the apartment building. I walked to the door, and saw a boy and a girl hanging out in an alleyway, laughing at something on their phone. I suddenly got very anxious, and retreated to the stairs. "Damn social anxiety.." I sighed, and began playing on my phone once again. I played on it for about an hour, and went back to the room. "How was it?" She asked me. "Eh." I answer, "you start school tomorrow, so why don't you head to bed?" She says, smiling at me. "Okay, mom. Goodnight, I love you." I say, giving her a hug. "Love you too, Y/n. Sweet dreams." She says, hugging me back. I head to my room, and go to sleep.
~after sleeping and school~
I get home, and open the door to see my mom, and her boyfriend, Shane, making out in front of the door. "Oh! Honey, you're home early!" She exclaims in surprise, pushing Shane off of her. You see, I hate Shane with a passion. All he does is cause arguments with my mom, and gets drunk constantly. I wish he would just disappear from our lives, to be completely honest. "I'm gonna go.." I mumble. "Wait, don't you want me to make dinner for you?" She asks. "No, I'm fine.." I say, shutting the door and bolting down the stairs, out
to one of the hallways of the apartment building. I sat at a corner, and began to play on my phone. It only took about 20 minutes until someone walked up to their apartment door. "Hey there, kid." Says an African American man, looking down at me. "Hey.." I say awkwardly. "What're you doing out here?" He asked, trying to hide some sort of badge. "My mom's boyfriend is in my house right now, so I'm waiting until he leaves." I explain, looking at my screen. "Sounds rough." He says. "I'm here because I'm visiting my mom," he explains. "Are you coming in, or are you gonna stand out there?" An old woman asks the man. She then looks down at me, and closes the door. "Hey, do you think you could back me up during dinner? My mom would probably be a bit nicer with a guest around." he asks me. "No, I'm good." I politely declined. Then, I see my mom coming down the hallway, looking for me. "There you are!" She sighs in relief, helping me up. "Are you this kid's mom?" The man asked my mom. "Yes I am, is there any problem?" She asks him. "Well, there's a drug dealer around here, and I think your kid may be the one who's drug dealing." He tries to joke. "Was that a joke?" My mom asks, showing no emotion. "It was an attempt." He says, sighing. "I'm detective Mike Norris." He says, shaking my mom's hand. "Karen Barclay." She says, shaking his hand back. "C'mon, Y/n. Let's go back up to the apartment." My mom says. "Is Shane still there..?" I ask, trying to bite back the anger that was bubbling up inside of me. "No, he left." She said with a sigh. I smile at her, and look at Mike. "It was nice meeting you, Mr. Norris." I say, smiling at him. "It was nice meeting you too, Y/n." He says, waving goodbye as we left. The way back to the apartment was silent, and I went straight to bed without even telling my mom goodnight. I was still kinda pissed about her letting Shane stay, but I know she's just blinded by whatever she sees in him. It isn't her fault she doesn't see that he's an awful person.
