I hate dresses.
Dresses were just so stereotypical, like if you were a girl you had to wear dresses. Well, I guess I shoved that theory in the ass, but I couldn’t honestly care less. I was not the sweet-heart good girl, I wasn’t going to be up myself and say I was some cool badass, but goodie-goodie just wasn’t my thing.
But today was different, or at least that’d what Alexis had told me while she shoved my into this tight lace dress. Today, to me, was like every other lousy day, but to Alexis it was, and I quote, ‘the best day of her entire life!’ The reason for that was a concert. The concert of Alexis’s favourite band in the entire world, that band just happened to be a band I wasn’t all that enthused about.
I stared at the reflection in the full length mirror, the white lace bodice hugging my torso then flowing out at my hips and turning an aqua-green colour. This was the only dress I had, and really the only dress I would wear. My hair was out and flowing over my shoulders, glowing a bright blonde in the places the sun hit it, and my eyes were outlined by think long lashed, made black by mascara, making the bluey-green colour stand out even more from my pale complexion. I signed, watching as my breath fogged the glass, like a sheet of my suffering. Suffering may have been a tad of an overreaction, but going out, wearing a dress, to some stupid concert, was the last thing I wanted to be doing on a Saturday night.
Staying home in PJs and sleeping on the other hand didn’t sound all that bad, but Alexis, one of my best friends, had made me dress up and go with her, having already bought three tickets. One for her, one for me, and one for Maddy. Speaking of whom, entered the room, wearing dark blue skinny jeans and a Green Day tank. Plus her signature red Converse. I glared at her through the mirror.
“How come you didn’t have to wear a dress?” She leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms and smiling comfortably at me through the reflection.
“Because I’m not the one who mopes around in PJs all day,” I rolled my eyes, causing her to laugh from behind me, shaking her head and smirking. “Now, if I know you well, and I think I do, you’re cussing me out in your head right now.” I looked back at my reflection, mumbling under my breath, and tried to ignore her laughter. As I smirked down at my shoes, trying to hide my amusement, Alexis strolled into the room in the prettiest dress she owned. Green, matching to her eyes, and yet still casual enough to pass for hot but not try-hard.
She smiled at the both of us, walking straight to the mirror and sliding her last few bobby pins into her long black hair, fixing the neat braid trailing down her back. “And what would we be laughing at?” She asked, turning to look at me and Maddy.
Maddy swept brown hair from her face, the matchstick straight strands flowing like chocolate over her shoulder, and I rolled my eyes once more. “At Jess’s misery.” Alexis glared at Maddy, chucking an arm around my shoulders.
“Maddy! Don’t be mean to poor Jess!” Maddy threw her hands up in surrender, turning and walking out of the room, still smirking. Me and Maddy always joked around like this, insults flying everywhere, though we never really meant any of it, especially when Maddy had been the best friend I could ask for, letting me stay with her and all.
See, I had been kicked out of home when I was sixteen; almost seventeen, because of a whole lot of shit, and Maddy who had sold her screenplay to a producer and gotten a movie contract was set up with her own penthouse apartment, and had been cool enough to let me stay with her in the two bedroom place.
Signing again, I turned around in time to see Alexis walking towards the door, clapping her hand. “I’m so excited! We’re going to see them! Oh my God!” We followed Maddy down the short hallway from my bedroom to the open floor plan lounge room/kitchen area, gathering the remains of our stuff as we headed to the door. Maddy flipped her hair over her shoulder, turning back to grin at us.
