" Always nice to hear from you, Jinx. How goes the job so far?" Kit's sarcastic tone greeted me on the other end of the line. I gripped the phone in my hand tighter, fighting the urge to start cursing at the girl. After all, insubordination was the reason I was stuck in this shitty situation in the first place. I had to at least try to be civil.

"It's great, a ray of fucking sunshine and rainbows." Well...I did say try.

" What do I owe the pleasure." She sighed. Clearly already fed up with my attitude. You'd think after all this time with me she'd be used to it.

"Well, you see. Here I am trying to start my job off on a good foot like the perfectly behaved and professional agent I am-" Her snort of disbelief interrupted me but I paid it no mind. "- when all of sudden, I realize there are pages missing from my file. Now, I'm sure I don't have to remind my lovely boss just how valuable information is in our line of work and how pages missing in a file could be viewed as negligence oh her part."

"Jinx..." She warned me. The sarcasm was practically dripping from my lips with a sweet venom that showed just how pissed I was at the situation. I continued to pace around the room, the room that would be my own for the duration of this assignment. Trace sat on the bed, following me with his eyes as I continued to push my luck.

"Somehow I wasn't even aware that one of the clients has a daughter. Here I was mentally preparing myself to prepare four people when in actuality it was five! I'm sure you remember just how frustrating this would be." Kit's deathly silence was basically a threat. I'm sure in her mind she had already thought up seven if not eight different ways she could make me suffer but since I was the Directors favorite, she bit her tongue and endured. "I wonder just how this could have happened but I'm sure you wouldn't have any clue...right?"

"Of course not." Kit spoke with the same annoyingly fake tone I gave her. I could practically hear the mocking smile that must have been plastered across her face right now. "I'll send Chip a new file for you. Be sure to collect it from her."

"Will do." I prepared to hang up but as always, she had to annoy me just a bit more.

" Oh and Jinx. I've already received an lengthy report from Captain begging that you be taken off the assignment. Remember to play nice with the other agents."

          "Is that a threat?"

"Just a friendly reminder from your boss." Definitely a threat.

"I'll try but we both know playing nice isn't exactly my strong suit."

"Believe me, I'm aware. A job is a job and this one has requirements that include teamwork. I really hope a low-ranking job won't go on record as your first failure." I narrowed my eyes, my lips spread into a thin line as I contemplated the threat behind her words. If she had to remove me from this case she would regard it as a failure. My reputation would take a major hit and I'd lose jobs because of it. That was unacceptable.

"Understood." I ground out through clenched teeth. "I'll keep that in mind." With that the call ended and I groaned before tossing the phone onto the bed. It landed beside Trace, who now raised his brows at me expectantly. I waved him off, the conversation not worth repeating. For the first time I glanced around the room. It was huge compared to the dorms I was used to. A walk in closet to my right gave me plenty of room to unpack my clothes and store my weapons. A desk stood to my left, completely bare except for the laptop Trace had played on it earlier. My favorite part of the room was definitely the bed. Queen sized and covered in a heavy and thick comforter that made me want to lay under it forever. The room itself was a light gray with white furniture and bedding. It was completely different to the dark and gloominess of the dorms. To be fair though, a huge reason they were dark and gloomy was because they were underground. A knock on the door dragged me out of my own head. The door swung open and kai stood on the other side. My eyebrow raised slightly, impressed at the seven year old who stood before me. After the conversation downstairs you would think his brothers had warned him to stay away from me, then again that would defeat the purpose of the body guarding job.
