I felt like I was invading on someone's life, but I was cleared to read this. She wrote it in her note. I glanced up to the clock. It was almost time to go home.
"You are going home soon right?" My supervisor spoke.
"Yeah, just getting things orginized so I can start right away tomorrow."
"Very good, not many think ahead these days." He put on his coat, "Well i am heading home, have a good night."
"The same to you sir."
He nodded before leaving the office. I leaned back in my chair. I closed my eyes and listened to the sound of foot steps of the night shift. Their steps quickly fading since their office was on the otherside of the building.
"You better not be sleeping."
I jolted up and searched for the suspect, my eyes landing on the janitor, Joe Buckery, nice man unless you disrespect his job.
"No, just enjoying a quiet moment."
"Yeah, soon all you will hear is people walking around and talking."
"Well I should leave." I stood up and stretched.
"Yeah you should. I heard about the case you are taking. Poor las." He lowered his head and sighed, a quiet sad one.
"I will find out why, after all, too many people drown in the darkness with reason."
"Do your best to hurry, she would like to move on soon."
I narrowed my eyes and watched his gaze shift to over my shoulder. "Something wrong Joe?"
His gaze met mine quickly, "Yeah, I cant do my job with you here."
I chuckled before turning my computer off and grabbing my coat. "Very well, I will leave." I quickly walked passed him, "Enjoy your night Joe."
"Same to you boy, and tell Levi I said hello."
I shook my head as I went towards the exit down the hall, "Will do."
It is no secret, Levi is the love of my life, and my co workers know. Without Levi, I would be just like my sister and this girl. I looked up at the sky as soon as I was outside. It was still bright, but I could clearly see the moon.
I paused in my step when my phone went off. I pulled it from my pocket and saw who was calling.
"Yes love?" I answered as soon as the phone was to my ear.
"Could you pick up some eggs and a gallon of milk on your way home?" I could hear the sound of the fridge closing, "Also bread?"
"Is that all?"
"As far as I know, yes, if anything else, I can get it tomorrow."
"Alright, see you soon, love you."
"Love you too."
I smiled as I put the phone away. He made me forget all my worries. I hummed as I walked to the car, unlocking it, i put my bag in the passenger seat. I closed the door and walked to the drivers side. As I got in, I glanced at my bag and noticed it open with a notebook peaking out.
I reached over and pulled it out. The same notebook I was about to read before leaving.
"How the? I swear it was on my desk."
I quickly glanced around as I started my car. Spotting nobody, I played it off as Joe sneaking it in whenever I wasnt looking.
"Maybe I put it in, or the case is getting to me."
I pulled the car on the street and began my way to the closest store. Even if the store is not far from work, I thought some music would relax me. When I pulled to a red light, I reached and turned on the radio.
I listened to the sound of classical music. I kept my eye on the light until it turned green.
Finally, I turned into the store parking lot. I was lucky and found a spot so close. I turned the car off and unbuckled myself. I patted myself to make sure I had my wallet and phone on me.
"Lets get this over with." I motivated myself.
As I reached for the door handle to begin my journey in the store, I glanced at the rearview mirror, and froze. Run, the only word to repeat in my mind and body. Yet, all I could do was stare.
A girl, pale skin, tangled brown hair, and a white dress greeted me in the reflection. Those details is not what scared me the most. Her eyes were black holes with tears flowing down her cheeks.
I watched fearfully as her cracked blue lips seperated. I knew there would be sound, for I had a feeling it was a message. I flinched when her vocals reached my ears, not in a soft whisper, but in a pained scream.
"HELP ME PLEASE!"
Every nerve in my body was pumped with adrenaline as I grabbed my keys and basically threw myself out if the car. The only sound in my ears was my car door slamming shut and all doors locking.
I sat in the empty spot next to my car. I couldnt sit there forever incase someone pulled in, so I quickly regulated my breathing before standing and brushing myself off.
As I passed my car to head inside, I glanced at the back seat and noticed it was empty. No sign of anyone ever being there. I shook my head and let out a shaky sigh, maybe I am streesed from work.
