I silenced my phone as it vibrated for the fourth time in the past five minutes.
"Are you sure you don't wanna get that?" Jade asked.
I shook my head and slid the phone into my pocket.
I grabbed my coffee mug and took a sip from it.
"Nah. It's no one important," I said, swirling my coffee with a thin black straw.
Jade raised an eyebrow but I knew she wouldn't push it.
"Anyway," she continued, "so I called him like seven times last night and each time it went to voicemail. Then finally on the eighth call he picks up and has the audacity to sound annoyed with me when he's the one who's been ignoring me all night."
I was only half paying attention to Jade as she told her story. I could've brought up the fact that he told her he was at a study meeting all night, but that point seemed counter-effective.
Jade sighed, biting her straw between her teeth.
"I mean we can both agree that's pretty shady, right? And he acts all defensive as if I'm the one being crazy. I'm not being crazy, right?" she looked at me but continued before I could respond, "Anyway, I need to find a way to get into that study meeting. He says he's gonna be there all next week and I don't buy it. So what do you say, you in?"
I stared at her blankly for a moment.
"In? For what?"
Jade rolled her eyes dramatically.
"In for crashing that study meeting next week. I'll probably get Matt to come and maybe Ilana but she's not good under pressure."
Honestly, I could think of a handful of things I'd rather be doing then crashing a study meeting next week.
But before I could answer Jade looked at me with pleading eyes. "Please, Toni. If Sam is cheating on me I won't be able to handle it alone. And if he's not then I need to make it look unsuspecting. And I can't bring Ilana because she'll get nervous and ruin the whole thing. And you can't leave me alone with Matt, one of us will probably kill the other before we even start."
I sighed, and looked at my coffee cup. "Fine. But only if you stop acting psycho."
Jade smiled widely. "You're the best."
I rolled my eyes, sarcastically.
I pulled my phone out and checked the time.
"I should probably get going," I said packing all my stuff back into my bag.
"Oh yeah on your hot coworker date," she grinned playfully.
I rolled my eyes. "It's not a date. And I don't have to remind you that I'm doing this all for you anyway."
"It may not be a date but you could totally make it one. You said yourself that he was cute and funny," Jade pointed out. "Besides, the closer you get to him, the closer you can get to the Hunters."
Jade gathered her stuff and shrugged. "I mean I'm just saying. We could all get some fun out of this."
I smiled before it quickly fading away. The hand of panic squeezed my heart making me feel sick. There was no way I would be dating anyone for a long time. Maybe forever.
I quickly brushed away the panic and cleared my expression.
"How about I stick to one thing at a time," I said, standing. "Soon you guys are gonna have me robbing banks or something."
