Chapter 2

Tyler was picking me up for Drew’s party within the next thirty minutes, and I still wasn’t ready. Sometimes I really needed female help in the fashion department. Living with your only sibling, a brother, and only having guy friends could be really unfortunate sometimes. My mom was a fashion buyer, meaning she bought clothes for a bunch of different stores. She was always traveling, but if she was home right now that would be the best thing ever. Somebody needed to tell me what to wear! Mom bought or approved all of my clothes, though, so I figured anything that I picked out wouldn’t be a "fashion disaster" or whatever girls called it.

Out of luck, Will’s girlfriend, Aubrey, happened to come over at that exact time. Since she and I actually got along really well, she helped me pick out an outfit consisting of a short ripped denim skirt, a cute knit shirt with a frilled bottom, and a pair of high-heeled black boots that almost came up to my knee. I thanked her for helping me and hurried to get ready before Tyler arrived. I finished getting ready with a few minutes to spare and made my way down the stairs, clutching onto the railing for dear life. Clumsiness plus heels and stairs equals injured Shayna. I shuddered at the thought of my last experience similar to this.

When I reached downstairs, I was faced with Will and Aubrey on the couch. Making out. I scolded them for scarring my mind, and they both laughed. I hoped they realized I was being serious because most girls do not appreciate coming downstairs to see their brother sucking face with his girlfriend. It isn’t a very nice sight.

Aubrey complimented me, saying that guys would be all over me. That could possibly be true if the all of the male population didn’t see me as a guy. One of the biggest problems I faced with being the only girl on the football team. Actually, some guys did look at me like I was a girl, but none of them were the guys that I’d ever even give a chance.

 “Go change.” Will demanded.

I scrunched my nose, “Why?”

“I don’t want little punks looking at my sister!”

Letting out a totally unattractive snort, I replied, “Don’t worry about that. And hey, Ty’s here. I’ll see you guys later!” I shut the door behind me, making my way down the driveway.

We arrived at Drew’s house quickly; his house wasn’t too far from mine. Before going in the house, Tyler slung his arm around my shoulders. For some reason, I always felt like he didn’t want any guys to look at me either. He was almost...protective over me.

Evan greeted us at the door. Out of all of his friends, he was the most outgoing. He was the funny guy that everyone loved to be around, not necessarily the guy that every girl wanted to date. He’d had a few girlfriends, but nothing too serious. It wasn’t that he wasn’t good looking or nice, because he was both. I’d assumed most girls just saw him more as a best friend rather than a boyfriend.

The beginning of the party was fairly calm. There were plenty of drinks. I accepted a beer, and didn’t plan on having anything else. After a while - or rather after everyone’s alcohol kicked in - the party became more lively. People started dancing and the music was turned up. Tyler and Collin convinced me to dance, so I did. I wasn’t the best dancer; I always thought I looked awkward. Which I probably did.

I felt a guy come up and dance behind me and I gave a face of disgust mixed with confusion  at Tyler and Collin. I didn’t understand why boys felt like they could invade a girl’s personal space without her permission. Just...no.

“Uh, dude? Leave.” Collin ordered of the guy.

“Whoa, man, calm down. I’m just trying to have fun.” The dancing guy slurred. I could smell the alcohol in his breath and almost gagged.

Tyler replied bluntly, “Have fun elsewhere. Goodbye.”

The guy, thankfully, left. If there’s one thing I love about my friends, it’s that they would always do whatever I needed them to. For example, getting rid of drunk guys.

I felt a slight blush on my cheek, but it quickly faded away, “Thanks.”

“Just doing our job.” Collin winked.

Throughout the course of the night, I had a few more beers. Beer was kind of my thing. I never really drank anything else. I wasn’t completely gone by time I went home, but I’d been a little tipsy. Tyler, being the responsible designated driver he was, only had a single drink earlier in the night. When we arrived at my house, I gave him a kiss on the cheek goodbye and headed up to my room to get changed. My feet were hurting like hell.

I flickered on the lights in my bedroom, and they burned my eyes slightly. I slipped my clothes off, changing into a oversized t-shirt and a pair of pajama pants. I was too lazy to brush my teeth or remove my makeup, so I decided to just go straight to bed. It didn’t register to me for a few seconds after I turned around that my shades weren’t down. Evan’s window was right across from mine, and with it being dark out and bright inside my room, there was a clear view at me changing. For a second I freaked out and searched for Evan in his room. He had left the party right before me after what I saw to be a very serious phone call, and his lights were still on.

A few seconds later I saw his figure enter the room followed by an angry version of his father. I blinked a few times, trying to moisten my dry eyes.

What I watched after that was too much for my half-drunk brain to comprehend.
