Almost a week after that visit with Freya, Margret finally received a letter from Keelin. She apologized for not writing sooner, but she had been busy and was trying to settle in and get comfortable with her new surroundings. She asked Margret how she was doing and how everything was in New Orleans, and she included an address where Margret could send her own letters. Margret was thrilled to finally hear from her, and immediately sat down to write a letter back to her:
Dear Keelin,
I just received your letter. I'm glad to hear you've been able to settle down in your new surroundings and get somewhat comfortable. Is it difficult out there? I know that must sound like a stupid question, since it's the military, but I wouldn't mind hearing about it if you ever want to talk about it.
Everything has actually been going well for me here in New Orleans. I've been cutting down on my alcohol consumption (doctor's orders, you know) with some help from Josh, who has become something of a friend to me. I also visited Freya last week to see how she is. She told me a little about her family, and I think she's a bit lonely. I'm trying to make friends with her so she can have someone else on her side. I don't think she's figured out yet that I would like to try being friends.
I don't have anything else to write you about, so I will end it there. Good luck on your end of things.
Yours,
Margret
Margret wasn't sure if adding 'Yours' was a good idea because she didn't want to give Keelin any ideas about her real feelings, but she had already written it, so she left it.
The way she signed the letter apparently didn't matter, because Keelin wrote back to her soon without mentioning anything about it. In fact, she signed her own letters with 'Yours, Keelin'. She had written back to Margret to try to answer her question about being in the military, and she also said she was glad Margret was there as a friend for Freya.
As time went on, and they exchanged short letters back and forth, Margret felt was she falling in love with Keelin through her letters, her words, her writing. Keelin told her a little about her past, so Margret in turn shared a little of hers; she only told very little, however, because it wasn't anything she enjoyed discussing.
Meanwhile, Margret felt she was getting on quite well in New Orleans. She also met Hayley Marshall, who was the mother of Freya's niece Hope, and even met Hope herself on a few occasions. Margret had more conflicting feelings as she began to think of Freya as a good friend, perhaps even someone she could open up to. They talked a little about each other's lives, and after hearing about Freya's life, Margret thought perhaps her own hadn't so bad compared to the Mikaelson witch's.
"I'm happy now, though," Freya said once. But then she sighed and said, "I just wish the rest of my family was here."
Margret thought she would also like to meet the rest of the Mikaelson family. She heard other, horrible stories about them, but when Freya spoke of them, they had a better side, one where they loved each other and would do anything to protect each other.
All of this had become Margret's new normal, and she was quite comfortable with it. That is, until everything changed once again.
