(A/N: This is my first attempt at writing a novel, I would really appreciate it if you comment on how I can improve my writing or to point out my mistakes, thank you. I hope you enjoy.)
My name is Sam Reeds, and this is my story of how I spent my summer. I am a 17-year old boy that lives in the lovely state of Iowa, although life has always been tough here, I have always been able to call this place home. My father is a farmer and always suggests that I should take over him in the family business, screw that I don't want to take after him. I hate him deeply, but I still love him. My mom, she's a housewife, she has always been the person I have looked up to and could always rely on, she is the strongest person I know.
It was the start of summer break and I had no plans as usual for my holidays, we never went away due to the fact that my father couldn't make enough money as a farmer for a holiday trip to anywhere at all not even a nearby city or town, but that is really common here, everyone usually stayed home during the holidays in Iowa.
"SAMMMM!!!!" I heard someone scream from outside my window. I could easily recognize that voice from anywhere, it is Zoe Parks, my girl-best friend, we have known each other our whole lives, growing up in the same town and going to the same schools, she is like a sister to me, she seems really girly but that is not the case with her she is a really tough girl and she does love adventure.
"Come join me, we are going to go for a walk by the woods." she said.
"Sure thing, Zoe just let me get ready." I replied. I could never say no to her, I always felt like she would start to cry if you did, she is a big softy by heart. I quickly got dressed and rushed down the stairs
"Bye mom, I am going to go for a walk with Zoe, I will be back soon!" I got out the door and was almost instantly tackled to the ground.
"Zoeee, you can always hug me normally!!!" I scolded her.
"But this is way more fun! I am just so excited to see you!" she said cheerfully with a big smile on her face. She is and always has been the most positive and happiest person anyone has ever known, the light of the group I would call her. I always loved that about her.
"Let's go get Alex, he would probably like to join us." Zoe said in content. We walked to Alex's house which is only about a five-minute walk from my house. As usual we greet with a hug.
"Nice to see you, brother." he says. Our families have known each other for years, we consider each other as family and always have each other's back.
"Yeah, it is nice to see you man." Alex Fletcher is a really smart person, he is usually the person who is always right and he will get upset if he is wrong no matter how small the topic is, he is the cool one in our small group, he always makes us laugh with his humor, and he is the sporty type.
"So, you guys are also not going away for the holiday?" I asked already knowing the answer.
"You know how it is, the same old every year." They said in unison.
"Well, we got a whole summer break, we should still have fun while we can!" Zoe said in excitement. Alex and I nodded, and we started our walk. We followed our usual route, to walk on the outsides of the city near the woods. The scenery of the woods is pretty, the sparkling of the lake water and the beautiful wild animals. It is peaceful. I would usually walk the route alone to clear my mind if something at home did not go well usually if my parents had a dispute. I have always been a person who would be on my own while growing up, it is sometimes really nice to go out with friends' time to time.
"What are you thinking about, Sam?" Zoe asks.
"Oh, nothing I just am wondering about what we are going to do for this break." She knows I was lying and so did Alex, I always had something on my mind that was bothering but I never really shared my thoughts. While strolling through the woods we walked into a group of upper-class kids. One of the kids is called Ryan Brown, he is the leader of their little "gang"
"Well, is it not a surprise to walk into you here on our turf." Said Ryan confidently.
"Back off Ryan, we know you guys just want to cause trouble." Alex said in anger.
"Alex, calm down we cannot fight these guys. They will win either way." I whispered to him.
"We do not want you lower-class around our woods, please leave." He said with a smile on his face.
"And if we don't?" Alex replied.
"Alex, we should leave, they outnumber us by five and I do not want to risk getting Zoe hurt." I whispered to him again.
"Fine, we were just going anyways." Alex finally said. Zoe was quiet the whole time, in complete fear, I could not risk her getting hurt I would never forgive myself. We headed back to Alex's house after encountering the upper-class kids.
"We should mess with them." Alex suggested plotting evilly.
"What?" Zoe asked.
"We should mess around with the upper-class kids, show them that they cannot just always push us around." Alex is very smart and always knows what he is doing, but this idea seemed a bit rash and unreasonable.
"I don't know it might be a bad idea, they can get away with anything even if they start it." I said.
"No, we won't do anything that will get us into trouble, just enough to get them to stop bitching us around. " I could tell he already has a plan from the look on his face.
"Sure, let's do it, are you game, Zoe?"
She was quiet for a second but lit up and said "S-sure." I felt like she was feeling like she was forced into this but could not bring myself to ask.
"Okay, what is the plan, Alex?" I asked.
"We are going to play a couple pranks on them until they stop with their crap." He said in determination. Zoe still seemed unsure about doing any of this she usually does not act like this, it is very odd of her.
"Don't worry Zoe, I won't let anything bad happen to you." I said smiling.
She smiled and nodded her head. "I know you won't."
"So, we are game. Let's start planning tomorrow morning, I got to get home it is almost time for dinner, let's plan a sleepover for tomorrow and act soon." I said. We greeted each other and Zoe left first, and I left after.
I left Alex's house devising a plan and how we can get back at the upper-class kids for all the years of unfair treatment, it is not an easy thing to do, especially since they have way more power than us. The upper-class kids have always looked down onto us. We were tired of being mistreated for being born into poorer families and decided to get back at them for once and for all. I was soon to realize that these kids are not normal kids to be messed with.
