Walk Two Moons
By Sharon Creech
Thirteen-year-old Salamanca (Sal) Tree Hiddle is driving from Euclid, Ohio to Lewiston, Idaho with her nutty grand parents. Gram and Gramps Hiddle are determined to get their little Chickabiddy to Lewiston for her mother’s birthday. Sal entertains her grand parents with the stories and memories she has from when she started her new life in Ohio.
Sal tells about her friend, Phoebe, who believes in her superstitions about everyone, even her own mother. Phoebe’s family received frequent notes with strange phrases at their door step until Phoebe finds a note left by her mother, who had disappeared for a while soon after.
The details in Sal’s story also relate to the things that she remembers from her mother and her big, beautiful house in Bybanks, Kentucky.
On the road a few unexpected things happen with Gram and Gramps. When Gram and Gramps can’t drive any further, Sal takes the car and heads closer to Lewiston. Sal finds a valley where a bus had crashed. Little did Sal know, her mother was on that bus.
This book is very interesting. The characters show such emotion that you can picture it in your head.
I found out about this book and this author when my fourth grade teacher read it to the class. I just had to read it for the second time. I found the book in a store a year later. When I read it again, it seemed more interesting. I think I liked it more the third time I read it because I could relate to it more.
This book is filled with emotions, good and bad, friendship, mystery, and death. You won’t want to put this book down. Don’t be surprised if a tiny tear or two rolls down your cheek.
