. . . WHEN CONSIDERING THE COURSE of her life, Jess liked to imagine it was cleaved in half. As though it were a long string, stretching eighty-seven years, snipped in two at the twelve-year mark. If she were one for the history books, scholars and professors would classify it in two separate halves. It would be concise. The way that historians tell time, the before and after of a catastrophe, an English teacher's methodology of a person defined.
But more simply put, Jess liked to pretend that the person she was before Jamie's death, and the person she became after it were two separate entities. Two mirroring stories with a tragic ending leading into an unhappy beginning. That somehow made the fact of the matter easier to swallow.
The fact that it was all her fault.
That she killed Jamie.
