Jenny Jenkins was a normal 15-year-old girl who lived on an apple farm with her family. She had a dad, a mom, and a 10-year-old brother named Alex. They all lived happily on the farm, though they didn't have a lot of money.
Sometimes Jenny would go into town with her grandfather's old guitar and sing the folk tale he used to teach her. She would get tips and all that, and that helped her family.
Yep, Jenny had a good life. Until Mr. Jack Grant arrived in town. Mr. Jack moved in next door to the Jenkins. He was a rich banker from New York. Why did he move into this tiny town? Nobody knew, but what Jenny knew was that he gave money to poor families like the Jenkins.
She was happy to have such a kind neighbor. Mr. Jack even came over to make sure everyone was happy and healthy! Though he kinda creeped Jenny out. He would laugh at roadkill, he always had a Cheshire smile on his face, even when sad, and he had a glass eye that would roll in his head oddly.
Jenny thought she was just being judgemental and rude, Mr.Jack was a nice man. But deep inside she knew something was wrong with him, and the feeling only grew as she got older. On Jenny's 18th birthday she went to town with her guitar and she sang all day, it was her passion. She was walking home for dinner when she saw Mr.Jack exit her house.
"Oh howdy, Mr.Jack."
He tipped his hat to her and his odd smile grew.
"Uh...whatever is your reason for your visit?"
"Happy birthday Jenny, " his smile grew even bigger.
"Well thank ya." She nodded and he left. She stared at him for a moment until a blood curtailing scream came from inside her house. She ran in the see her dad looking up the stair with a worried expression. "What happened, pop, " she asked quietly.
"I don't know, ya mom went to get Alex but then she screamed, should we go up there?"
Jenny nodded and took the lead. She saw her mom looking into her brother's room with a terrified look. "d-david... David, " she yelled for her husband shakily.
"Veronica? Whatever is the matter?"
She slowly turned towards the two with tears in her eyes. She slowly lifted a hand to point into Alex's room. Jenny's dad pushed past her to look inside and gasped in surprise, wide-eyed and on the verge of tears. Finally, Jenny walked over and gasped at the scene before her, her little brother was hanging from the ceiling, dead. On his chest was a piece of paper with big frantic writing that read: Happy Birthday, Jenny
No, no this can't be. She knew it was Mr. Jack, she just knew it. "Wha-why would he-?" Jenny trembled in fear and sadness, her little brother was taken from her and it was posed as a suicide. She started to sob and choke, she forgot how to breathe.
Then an image crossed her mind, Mr. Jack's big smile. That's why he was smiling like that, he was satisfied with his kill!
Jenny fell to her knees. She wanted, no. She needed to expose the awful man for who he is, but how?
