It had been two months since Error and Ink's last encounter.

And you could say that Ink wasn't handling it very well.

Every night, he had nightmares, he heard Error's last words as he went through the portal, so cold and hurt. He couldn't bear doing things like this to people, but it was for their own good. Anyone close to Ink would get hurt - Error only proved that point. He hated being a burden on other people, having to rely on them to help him. It was unfair, he should take care of himself.

Ink wanted so badly to tell Error that he was sorry, and everything that had been going through his head on the night of his choice, when Shadow, his gaster blaster pet, had thrown Error off into the wall. He remembered Error's limp, listless body, the way he looked calm and almost happy, relaxed, peaceful. The way Ink had slid down Shadow's ribcage and ran over to him, and scooped Error up in his arms, the way he'd gotten Shadow to run them all the way to the entrance. There was no way to create a portal in or out of the Crease, as Ink had decided to call it, and you could only teleport once you were inside. The coordinates glitched and jumped about, always changing. It was unstable and dangerous, so Ink usually got Shadow to give him a boost. That day, Shadow had gently nudged them up the tunnel and to the top, into the dark cave.

Ink had thanked Shadow, then portalled to classic Undertale, not an AU. He found Toriel, and she'd taken care of Error, making sure his bones were not damaged or anything. He was mostly unharmed, and Toriel simply rubbed a special cream over his small injuries that made them go away. She'd said not to wake him up by force, to let him float back to consciousness when he was ready.

He'd felt so guilty - in fact, he still felt guilty. That was all his fault.

Ink sighed, the memories bringing shards of pain all through his body. He wondered if he should give up all his emotions, just so that the pain wouldn't come back, and Nightmare wouldn't stop pestering him.

Nightmare was now always hanging around Ink, trying to make him feel worse by talking about Error and betrayal and guilt. He did his job well, and soaked in all of Ink's negative feelings until he got bored.

Two months.

Two whole months. Ink wished he could see Error again, but every time he thought about trying to find him, he stopped himself. It was better this way, surely. Although, Ink was finding it harder and harder to encourage new writers and young authors to keep writing. They all seemed to be quitting these days.

Ink thought he might never see Error again.

He was wrong.

...

One afternoon, Ink gathered up some food and travelled to UnderFell. He teleported to the cave, wandered inside, and found the crevice. He jumped down and was swallowed by darkness, until the flickering firelight from the Crease began to glow. Brighter and brighter, until his feet hit the floor.

Ink found Shadow, his gaster blaster pet, easily. The creature was massive, with the skull of a gaster blaster, and the skeleton of a large animal. His bony tail swung from side to side as he leapt forward, happily bounding around Ink, waiting for his food. The animal ate pretty much everything, including Ink himself. Too many times had he tried to bite the skeleton.

Ink dumped the food on the floor before Shadow, and the monster swallowed it in one bite. He looked up, expectantly, at Ink for more, then suddenly, his white eyes flicked to something behind him. Shadow wagged his tail excitedly and ran off.

Ink took a deep breath and turned around to see what his naughty pet was doing. Shadow's large skeletal body obscured his view, but from what he could see, Shadow was licking the floor.
