I put on some cute jean shorts with lace on them and a cute lace tank. I put on a little makeup before Kara called us down for lunch. I went downstairs where everyone else was already at the dining table. All eyes landed on me.
I looked around at the different people sitting there. Kara and Mark were giving me smiles that said 'I know how awkward this must be for you...' Most of the boys were smirking but Noah was giving me a hard glare, much different from the reaction I got from him earlier...
Unfortunately the only seat left was the one next to him."What's your deal?" I whispered in his ear. He looked at me intensely, I stared back. He glanced down at his plate. I smirked, knowing that I won.
"So, Dylan, what do you think so far?" Kara asked.
"Your house is lovely," I said, "but it will take some time to get used to."
"I understand, this whole moving situation must be hard for you."
"Yeah, it is..." I was getting choked up at the thought of Sammy and Liam.
Just then Zach chose the perfect time to ask the question, "Why are you here?"
"ZACH!" Kara screeched, "I'm sorry Dylan, I don't where his manners went." Zach rolled his eyes at her and looked at me with interest.
"It's a good question though." Noah piped in, "Why exactly did you come to live with us?"
"Boys, listen to your mother." Mike said sternly.
"It's ok, I understand their curiosity." I said. "My life at home... was... well... it sucked."
Carter was now curious too. "Why was it so bad?" My eyes darted to Kara, pleading for help.
"Let's change the conversation. " She said. I silently thanked her.
Suddenly the whole family launched into a conversation about sports, school, late homework, birthdays that were coming up, and I was forgotten. Not that I wasn't used to the feeling. Now, for some reason, it was different. It never really bothered me, being alone. Sometimes I enjoyed it, but now I felt awkward and out of place. Like I would never be a part of this discussion, I would never be part of this family. That's what I really wanted right now, a family. Don't get me wrong, Kara and Mike are great, but they aren't my parents, they never were, they never will be.
I started to eat the chicken on my plate that was getting cold. It was really good, but I didn't feel like eating.
Kara's voice dragged me out of my trance. "Dylan, you will be stArting school Monday."
"Ok, do you know when volleyball tryouts are?" I had always loved volleyball. My mom played when she was in highschool.
"You play volleyball? That's great! I think tryouts are next Thursday and Friday."
