The Carters packed the night Isabella got the news and are currently loading the small moving truck before the sun has risen.
Isabella's movements are robotic as she places her suitcase in the moving truck. She still couldn't wrap her head around the fact that they're leaving their house behind and moving to the other side of the city! She doesn't want to leave. What about her friends? Her school? Her boyfriend? Her whole life is here.
Isabella's mother keeps reassuring her that this will only be temporary and they'll be coming back once her father figures out a way to fix this. The fact that the said man is on his 5th cup of whiskey didn't reassure Isabella at all. He looks broken and defeated. Isabella sighs and instead of making her father feel worse by complaining, she goes to help Tyler with his luggage.
"Izzy, where is dad taking us this time? I want to go to the beach! Or even better, Jurassic Park!" The little six year old boy jumps from the thought of seeing a T-Rex.
Another sigh emitted from Isabella, "Ty, I've told you that Jurassic Park is just a movie," Isabella said, crushing the little boy's dream. Isabella feels bad but it's better to tell him now before he learns it from the bully at school. Which he'll probably never see again.
Once the moving truck is filled, the Carters are on the way to their new house that they were able to afford with Isabella's mother's personal savings. Since her father gambled every penny of his and the joined account that her parents shared as well as the house, Isabella's mom was forced to take out money of her own personal savings. Making some quick calls and asking in some favors, Isabella's mom managed to get a house quickly with very little struggle.
Although Isabella's mother's savings bought a house, it's inadequate in her eyes. Based on pictures that were presented to Isabella, the house is small and plain but it's the only one they could find on such short notice.
Isabella could do nothing but stare out the window as the sun rose higher and watch how the environment changes the farther they drive. The luxurious neighborhood she is used to fades and is being replaced by smaller homes. Kids litter around, the adults talk, and teens bunch together probably gossiping. Isabella expects the car to stop soon but it didn't. The car keeps going until it enters a part of the city where the sun does not shine.
The car finally comes to a stop after a forty minute drive and parks in front of the house Isabella saw in pictures, although it looks different in person. The small picket fence that was in the photos isn't there. Trash almost covers the front lawn completely and the front door and windows have graffiti on them. Hesitatingly, the Carters step out to look at the house. They were stunned in place on the sidewalk as they look at the broken down, one story house.
Isabella began to feel shivers and her baby hairs behind her neck stood on alert, the kind someone gets when they feel eyes on them. Not liking the feeling, she looks around to find the source but can't pinpoint where it is coming from. Isabella squirms uncomfortably and tries to ignore it.
"Okay, let's go inside shall we," Isabella's mom says, breaking the silence between them. She turns towards the car and grabs her suitcase.
Isabella sighs and follows suit, grabbing her own suitcase along with her brother's.
Tyler, oblivious to the eerie environment that surrounds him, happily runs to the front door and patiently waits for his mother to come and open the door. Similar to an innocent, well trained puppy.
Isabella's mom walks up the three-step stairs and reaches to pull the keys out of the mail box where the previous owner said he would leave it. She pulls out the keys and opens the door. She walks back to the car and helps Isabella with carrying the bags.
