Just a little something I was working on in creative writing class :3
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sixteen. It seems like a big number, or maybe an age that means more freedom (and more school work to inflict with that), or maybe it’s just another year living in your sister’s shadow. It’s a year of countless parties and memories that got a little hazed in all the madness (spiked punch anyone?).
Lauren and Darcy, well mostly Lauren for anyone that cared, were daughters of one of the biggest and most powerful politicians in the state. Lavish galas, stunning ball gowns, and putting on a gleaming fake smile for anyone that wanted to catch sight of it became second nature for Lauren, daddy’s little angel. Darcy on the other hand saw straight through her sister’s facade and chose to stay on the sidelines. Almost sixteen years of being the quiet audience watching the master puppeteer's show, hoping to escape the multitude of painted faces her sister could put on for just about any performance. But what could possibly be a better way than inviting an old enemy to a glamorous sweet sixteen?
Lauren’s ex, James, was trouble and everybody knew it. Darcy needed a favor from said bad boy and he owed her big time. So an invite to the biggest sweet sixteen anyone would ever experience landed in his mailbox, begging for him “to take her back despite her crude flaws and find her at the party. XO, Lauren.” Now Lauren purely hated James for unknown reasons since they ended it, but nobody knew why, except maybe for Darcy. She did have quite a good way of finding out things when nobody knows they are being listened to.
The night of the party was finally upon them and Lauren was again stealing the spotlight in her fabulous red ballgown while her whole clique lined up to take pictures with the queen. Darcy was waiting in the bathroom of the venue for her best friend Kelsey to arrive. While Darcy was fixing her black mermaid dress, some of Lauren’s minions found their way in.
“Did you see who was here? Lauren is going to be pissed!” the one said, looking in the mirror trying to stick her fake eyelashes back onto her lids.
“Pipe down,” the other replied. “Don’t spoil her day. Hopefully they won’t bump into each other.”
Darcy could guess that her little eight ball guest had arrived already and was about to start his search for the queen herself. Just then Kelsey arrived, and Lauren’s posey quickly left the room. It could have been Kelsey’s bright blue hair or the fact she was in a color block tux, or maybe because nobody liked the strange band girl in black.
“Okay, so I saw James and he was already trying to hunt down Lauren. I told him that she was in the main hall on the dance floor so hopefully that will give us some time to complete our plan,” she said rapidly.
“Alright, I’m going to see if our little friend wants a drink if he hasn’t made his way to the bar already.” Darcy double checked her clutch to make sure the flask of vodka was still there. “Don’t do anything… yeah nevermind. Go request some songs.”
“I’d thought you’d never ask,” she smirked as she fluttered out of the room.
“Hey! NO SCARING PEOPLE, ‘KAY?” Darcy tried to call but Kelsey’s heart was already set on something that could possibly kill the vibe of the party, and the ears of all the guests. Oh well.
Just as Darcy had suspected James was in the main hall waiting by the bar. His hair was gelled back perfectly and his jet black tux suited his six foot four figure just as perfectly. No wonder Lauren had dated him, he looked like a model.
“Two punches, please,” Darcy gestured over to the bartender, taking a seat next to James. “So how’s the party life treating you?”
“Huh? Oh it’s you, where’s your sis?” James’ eyes kept wandering over the dance floor, looking for Lauren who clearly wasn’t here.
“Oh I have no clue.” The bartender came over with the drinks and placed them on little napkins color coded with the theme of the party. James was still searching for Lauren while Darcy unscrewed the cap on the flask and poured the clear liquid into the glass. Just then James turned around, seeing the flask before she could stow it back in her clutch. He grabbed it, downing the whole thing before Darcy could protest, chasing it with his glass of punch.
“Might as well enjoy this party while I still can, right?” James got up just as Lauren entered, staggering a bit before swiftly crossing the room to retrieve his previous girlfriend. “There you are my beautiful,” James slurred, reaching down to steal a kiss from the unsuspecting girl.
“Ugh who invited your ass to my party?” Lauren sneered, dodging the kiss.
“My darling, don’t reject me again. Come here, let’s play a little game...” James grabbed Lauren off of her feet and took her out of the room, just as Darcy locked eyes with Kelsey across the dance floor. Both of the girls ran after them, just as the song Kelsey requested started to play. I got your picture. I'm coming with you. Dear Maria, count me in. There's a story at the bottom of this bottle. And I'm the pen.
“Nice song choice Kels,” Darcy commented while running after the misfit couple.
“You did say no scaring anybody.” Just then a closet door down the hall clicked shut. Coming closer, Kelsey could see the lock on the outside of the door had been pushed in. She twisted the knob, but the door was stuck. “So… I guess they are stuck in there now aren’t they?”
“Huh, not exactly the way I was planning on ruining her night but I guess this works.” Darcy glanced over at Kelsey. “How long should we leave them in there?”
“I don't know,” Kelsey walked over to a cart down the hall, pulling a bottle of champagne from a bucket. “Maybe, seven minutes?” Kelsey smirked, opening the bottle.
“Oh, nice one. Cheers?” Darcy took a long swig from the bottle as Lauren kicked the door and yelled for help.
“LET. ME. OUT. I HATE YOU ALL.” Soon Lauren’s cries faded out as the song in the main hall neared its end. There’s a story at the bottom of this bottle...
