My whole body is on fire. My head aches and my stomach hurts. A lot. I open my eyes for a brief moment and shut them back because the lights are to bright. I hear Alissa's voice in the background and a child crying.
Shit. Julie. I open my eyes again and this time Alissa notices.
She runs over and holds my hand tears forming in her eyes.
"Where am I?"
"Eva, hi. You're fine. You were involved in an accident but you are fine now. Julie misses you". As I'd on cue, she starts to cry and Alissa smiles.
But it doesn't reach her eyes.
There's something in her eyes, something she is not telling me but I feel to weak to push it.
I open my hands to hold Julie who is now crying with all her might. Alissa helps me to raise up my shirt so I can feed Julie. After she starts eating and we can hear ourselves again, l ask
"How long have I been out?"
" A few hours".
I now remember what happened and I ask
"My car?"
She looks away and bites her lip.
Now something is definitely up.
"What is it? Is it a complete wreck?" I ask my throat closing up. I spent half of my savings on my car. Oh no.
She doesn't answer and I know better than to pressure her into talking.
So I look away and pretend that right now, one of the most important persons in my life isn't hurting me right now.
And it hurts like hell.
After a while the doctor comes in and recommends some drugs for the bleeding on my head. I am not going to be discharged any time soon.
I sigh and lean back slightly careful not to wake Julie who is sleeping on my lap.
As soon as the doctor leaves and Julie is fast asleep besides, I look over to Alissa, who has quite a lot of explaining to do.
"I need to go to the house and get you a change of clothes, bottles for Julie and-"
"No. You need to start talking I tell her with a gaze that melts her and she sighs.
And when she's done I regret she started talking.
