Regan slid under the logs and, popping up on the other side, she raced toward the high fence.
"Stop!" a rotund policeman jogged after her, his plump cheeks red and his chest heaving.
Regan stopped and turned to look back. The policeman was heaving himself over the logs and Regan snickered.
"What do you want me for?" she asked, turning back to the fence to figure out how to get over it.
"You are under the age of sixteen and must therefore go to Grimswall Orphanage." he commanded imperiously.
Regan snorted and started climbing the fence, "Listening to you, one would think that you were the Governor." she paused at the top and, glancing down the other side, she saw multiple policemen waiting for her, guns trained on her.
"Ha. Gotcha now." the rotund policeman announced as several more policemen joined him.
Regan laughed, "You need..." she counted the policemen surrounding her, "...seventeen policemen to catch one little girl." she taunted.
"Get down from the fence and put your hands behind your head." a policeman commanded.
Regan shrugged and put her hands behind her head.
"Get down." the policeman told her again.
She put one foot off the edge and balanced precariously for a few seconds, then jumped off and, doing a spin, she landed on three of the policemen and quickly she spun around and disarmed two behind her.
"Hands up." the last policeman told her.
She put her hands up, and lashed out backwards with her leg. Hearing a grunt of pain, she turned to look and saw the policeman bent over, groaning.
Regan smirked, "Serves you right for messing with me." she huffed, stepping past him.
"Hands up." she heard another voice.
"Honestly, you keep using the same phrase. Get creative people." she whipped around, ready to deal a blow.
She was instantly caught in an arm lock. "Next time," the person whispered in her ear, "just do as I say." Regan nodded and the person handcuffed her.
They led her to a black car and shoved her in the back seat. The instant they closed the door, Regan slipped a hairpin out of her back pocket and worked it into the keyhole.
Soon she heard a satisfactory click and the handcuffs slid off her wrists.
"Well done." someone said.
Regan jumped and looked up. There was a person sitting beside her and she berated herself for not seeing them before.
"I didn't think you'd do it." the person acknowledged. They leaned forward and Regan was able to see their face.
"Gov." she nodded.
Governor Martin shook his head, "I'm sorry but it had to be as real as possible."
Regan dangled the handcuffs in front of his face, "Handcuffs? Really?"
He shrugged and leaned back again.
Regan rolled her eyes and tapped on the glass between them and the driver. "Let's go." she told the driver.
The driver nodded and they started off.
"To the palace." Regan murmured.
Governor Martin nodded, "Did you get the file?"
Regan pulled a thumb drive out from her pocket and tossed it to the governor. "Here you go. I hope this means I can go back to sleeping in my own bed instead of on the streets."
Governor Martin nodded and slipped the thumb drive into his own pocket.
Regan smirked, "Good." Slipping her hand into her pocket she felt the real thumb drive. Idiots. I work with idiots and for idiots. she thought, They'll never find out...not until I'm far away from here.
"Of course...we'll need to search and disinfect you when we get to the mansion." Governor Martin told her, "Who knows if someone might've planted a tracker on you."
Regan nodded and immediately dismissed the thought of leaving. She pulled out the real thumb drive and tossed it to him. "You need to be smarter." she scoffed.
Governor Martin rolled his eyes. "Whatever."
Soon they entered the mansion gates. Regan hopped out and went to the disinfection area.
"Hey. Do you have it?"
Regan rolled her eyes. "Give me two hours."
