This is where the real question lies. That being said, the closed ecosystem of iPhones and its maximum security jail limits what the user can do with their devices. While the jail like restrictions may be considered a huge bother, that extreme measure helps in a more security-focused prospect. Updates are typically given directly from Apple Inc. itself which is the brand manufacturer and the operating system developer to the devices. On top of that apps can only be downloaded from the apple store itself and no outer sources whereas, with Android, things are a little different.

Android, with its open source code, puts the devices at a much higher level of being liable to security breaches. This means anyone can tinker with the devices' Operating System core codes. And of course, with too much tinkering the vulnerabilities also increase opening their devices'

security to vulnerabilities that go-getters could exploit to their own interests such as Phishing.

So the iphone version of getting access to its Operating system is known as "Jailbreaking". Whereas for Android devices, the process is referred to as "rooting" ( https://odindownload.com/root-android/ ) and getting root access. And Jailbreaking is the equivalent of android rooting. But the process and the method to actually do this, is completely different. The main cause for jailbreaking back then was because people wanted to change their device carriers.

And in the case of rooting android devices, it is was to get root access to the users could flash custom ROMs through installing custom recoveries giving them new opportunities to modify their devices.
