Somebody was screaming and Shancai startled up at once.
Oh, it was she who was still shrieking. “What? Where? No!!!”
She rised from her daybed heavily gasping, her heartbeat palpitating. She sat there for a while keeping her head in her hands and breathed into them forming a bowl in front of her mouth to calm herself down. After a short while she shook slowly her head while rubbing her eyes and her cheeks, scratched her head and then looked around in the room.
It was a big room with a high roof, tastefully furnished and decorated over and over in red colors. There were Chinese fortune symbols hanging on the walls and also above a tremendous huge bed, which was covered all over with red satin sheets and pillows. She instead, wrapped up in a white bathrobe, was now sitting on a settee, where she went to after the shower she had taken previously.
This must be her wedding room. But what was that before? She was still totally puzzled and looked in disbelief. Had that been a dream or was this now a dream? She peeked in her cheek – ouch – no longer dreaming - good. She sighed relieved.
All the incredible undeserving stuff she had dreamed afore. More a nightmare than a dream about her wedding or better the joke of a wedding. Ah-Si was denying to marry her and on the other hand there were Lei, Meizuo and even Ximen proposing to her? What? Finally Zhuang kicking the ass of his younger brother. This was the moment when she awoke.
A knocking sound came from the door, Mrs. Yu asking “Is everything ok with you my dear? You have to hurry, the guests will arrive in two hours. I’ll help you to dress up. The stylists have arrived for your hair-do and make-up. And I have to fix the diadem on your head afterwards, could be difficult. We come in now.”
And there she was. She carried a red gown on her left arm and held a box in her right hand. Two young female stylists followed her also armed with several boxes.
When Shancai spotted Mrs. Yu she sprang up at once, ran over to her and hugged her regardless of what the older lady had in her hands. “Y-Sa, I’m so glad to see you. I had such an evil nightmare!” Shancai sobbed on Mrs. Yu’s shoulder. “Ah, my dear Shancai, don’t worry. Now everything will be fine, you’ll become Mrs. DaomingSi only in a few hours.” Mrs. Yu stroke over Shancai’s head. “I’ll stay with you and get you dressed. No need to worry anymore. Ah-Si is already waiting for you. I saw him right now, he looks so gorgeous in his wedding suit. I wished I could be young again.” The old lady giggled like a child.
“But now we have to hurry, the crown is difficult to fix, I remember.” She put the box down and laid the gown over the daybed. It was a traditional red wedding gown, close to historic models but translated in a modern version. It consisted of two parts, a red quipao in a slight a-line shape, but with a sexy long cut at the side up to her thighs. Above came a sort of kimono with bottom-long wide kimono sleeves. All made out of red silk satin with a lot of golden embroidery on it. The kimono was to fix with a broad golden belt over her waist. The stylists started immediately their work, one with Shancai’s hair and one with a professional make-up. Then Mrs. Yu helped Shancai to put the gown on.
“You can easily undress the upper kimono and feel more comfortable in the Quipao after the ceremony. You look so marvelous.” Y-Sa helped her fixing the belt.
Shancai was going to change 3times her dress. After the official ceremony, which was held in the garden of Daoming mansion and when most of the high potentials and business guests would have left, she would slip in another white western-style wedding dress. At that time of the day most of the family would be around. But for the evening party with her and his friends she would change into another elegant white, but skinnier party dress for dancing. The party would take place at the hotel downtown Shanghai city, exact the same hotel where they had went on Ah-Si’s birthday once.
Hence Mrs. Yu rushed. “But now we put on the wedding crown. You know it belonged to Ah-Si’s grandmother.” For the official part Shancai would also wear an impressive wedding diadem with countless long, red and golden tassels on each side.
Shancai unlike her normal shy and understated behavior, had decided to marry as traditional as possible as a sign of respect to her becoming now part of the ancient family of his groom. And that kind of wedding dress supported Shancai to be self-confident as it was a kind of statement.
Mrs. Yu set the crown on Shancai’s long hair which was artificially pinned up and fixed it on her head with several combs, clips and ribbons. At least the stylist renewed her make-up again. Ready.
She looked in the mirror and was bare of astonishment. A beautiful young woman, self-content, matured and with an incredible strong aura looked out of the mirror.
“Y-Sa, that’s so wonderful, I look like a Chinese princess of the Ming Dynasty. This is your masterpiece, I will ever keep that dress in esteem.”
Mrs. Yu who had spent a long time to create the gown smiled proudly and answered: “Ayah, wait, wait till you have seen your groom,” she smiled over and over as if Y-Sa herself got married.
“Ah-Si’s grandfather and his father of course as well would be so proud if he could have had the possibility to see his grandson marrying such a beautiful woman.” Mrs. Yu sobbed a bit.
It knocked on the door again, in front of it stood an exited groom. “What are you two doing, hatching eggs? It’s time to go down. We should be there before anybody of our guests enters the house! And wasn’t it you who wanted to have the pictures made in advance?” He stopped his sermon and stood in the door fully attached. His mouth fell agape and he was beaming in pure adoration at his love of his life.
Shancai gazed at her future husband. To see him off words happened so seldomly that she enjoyed the moment smiling from on corner of her mouth to the other.
In Ah-Si’s realization Shancai was glowing, radiant, literally hoovering. The most adorable person in his house seemed to be also physically transformed into a princess.
He slowly went to her and circled her. Then he stood next to her, both now in front of the mirror.
Mrs. Yu could no longer hold on and started to cheer up again with, “if only your father and grandfather could...” Ah-Si was dressed in a suit, only the jacket quoted the traditional style as it was made of the same red silk satin fabric as Shancai's gown but with moderate embroidery. The jacket was cut in closed Mao-style with a stand-up collar. He wore black trousers, later he was able to switch into a black suitable jacket. His dense black hair was styled to a moderate pineapple. Wow.
“You’re the best what ever happened in my life,” he whispered to Shancai in the mirror and then to her “Let’s go now, let’s start and face our future life together”.
