I ran to your house
and screamed until
you let me in.
You grew angry and threw stones
through your glass walls. You acted
but a child, not understanding
they would shatter.
I've stopped by a few times since,
thinking all was settled and through.
But when I stopped visiting, you see,
you returned to hiding away.
All the windows and doors
of my drafty house were left open,
should you drop by sometime.
Please understand that now,
the doors are closed and I've
been forced to find new locks.
You no longer hold the key.
Please understand that soon,
winter will come and freeze me out.
I cannot keep the windows open forever.
Please understand that I have reached
and I have called out
and I have cried for you to return.
This fireplace in the center (you could call it the heart)
of my house still houses a weak flame,
but it's windy outside as Autumn flows by.
I cannot keep the windows open forever.
And I cannot promise to let you in again.
