CHAPTER ONE:
Rain
"Hey look, Rain, I really got to go." Adam says finishing his hot chocolate.
"But..." I pause. "You can't go." I say.
"Why not?" He asks impatiently. "My parents are going to freak out on me if I'm home late."
I can't tell him that it's because I moved out of my jerk of a boyfriends house and have nowhere to live now. But I know I have to come up with something for this clingy behaviour.
When I first saw him sing, it gave me hope. Hope to live on and when he screwed up, it was like that hope ended and I needed him to finish giving me that hope.
"We still haven't had dessert." I half smile looking into my wallet. I have around one hundred dollars left that I stole from my boyfriend when I left.
He stole my heart, it's the least I can do to repay him.
"Um, no, I'm full and you got your hour." Adam says.
"Will I get another hour? Will I ever see you again?" I ask trying to hold back the questions.
"If we are meant to meet again, we will meet again."
"Your leaving this in the hands of fate?" I say wanting to scream at him.
"I'm leaving this in the hands of time." He says putting his coat back on and leaving the door.
I run after him. "You can't leave me!"
He turns around surprised. "No offense but your kind of cling...why not?"
"Clingy screw you. I don't need you anymore." I reply walking away. He doesn't come after me and I don't know where to go.
I keep walking until I reach this alleyway and just sit there leaning against a brick wall. Its raining out and dampening my spirits.
Maybe I should enroll in school again. I had stopped going when I switched homes to this area. I dropped school and maybe I should join it tomorrow.
"Hey." I hear a quiet voice and I look up to see a little girl. She has torn clothes but she looks well fed.
"What?" I ask. She can't be anymore than nine years old.
"How do you even survive on the streets?" She asks wiping some of her dried up tears into her unbrushed hair.
"Are you new to the streets?" I ask.
"Yeah...my parents they kicked me out." She says trying not to cry.
"I know how that feels like." I mumble.
"Your parents?" She asks.
"Foster parents. Anyways, I've always had a boyfriend to take care of me. The only reason that I'm on the streets is because I'm going through a breakup right now." I reply. "I'm Rain."
"I'm Cassy. Didn't you boy friend give you any money?" Cassy questions me.
"Oh yeah, he gave me money, he just doesn't know it yet. And it's not to be wasted." I reply stubbornly.
"Okay..." She trails off. "Can I stay with you?"
"You can come to children's aid with me in the morning." I say patting the spot next to me. Maybe Adam was my next guy target but that didn't work out.
"Ok." She replies sitting next to me and stealing glances when she thinks I'm not paying attention.
"What happened to your real parents?" Cassy asks.
I stare at her. "I lost them."
"They died?" She says nervously.
"Little girl, please don't ask me questions about my past." I plee with her.
She sighs. "I'm not a little girl and I really want to know."
"I know kids at your age open up to each other easily, but I'm sorry, I can't do that Cassy." I apologize.
"My parents are jerks. All they would do is fight and today, they decided they didn't want a kid and told me to leave." She says eyes glistening.
"Did you do anything to provoke it?" I ask carefully.
"Totally not...okay I might have told them to be quiet, but I was trying to sleep. I'm tired of them keeping me up." Cassy confesses. "I miss them."
"Cassy, you screwed up, they love you. They only told you to leave because they were fighting and they didn't appreciate you saying that. They are probably worried sick about you and don't know you went out of your yard." I reply.
"But..." She protests.
"No come on, we are taking you back now."
"You don't know where I live." Cassy says with a smirk.
"That's why your going to tell me." I smile and help her to her feet.
"What if they kick me out again?" She replies.
"Then let them, I'll help you out." I say seriously.
"Okay." She says satisfied with my answer.
The streets are dark and I check my cell phone quickly at the time. To no surprise it's midnight.
She leads me past the alley way and onto a dark tiny street leading into another alleyway. Though it's nicer because it has grass.
This is a mansion neighbourhoud. They are huge houses like nothing you have ever seen there be. You see these types of houses on the movies where you have a card and scan it to get access to just the gate.
Her house is a huge purple mansion with black gates and a metal pattered lion on those gates looking out from the mansion.
She types something into a keybord and the gates open to let us in. She walks to go knock at the door. A woman opens the door and hugs Cassy. I assume she's her Mom.
"Where were you? I had your Dad out searching for you. And the police." Her Mom says concerned.
"You told me to leave." Cassy says crying.
"But we didn't mean it." Her Mom says apologetically.
"Oh." Cassy replies as her Mom mouthes thank you to me.
"Come inside darling." Her Mom says quickly ushering her in. She protests.
"What about my friend? Can she stay at our home just for tonight?" Cassy asks.
"She helped you out?" Her Mom questions her.
Cassy nods yes.
"I wouldn't want to be a bother, I'm going to children's aid in the morning." I protest.
"No, not a bother. You helped Cassy out so you can stay here for as long as you need to. Or whenever you to." Her Mom replies.
