With the air sucking in between his teeth, you knew he was changing his bandages again. you put up a simple encouraging smile to ease his discomfort. sometimes it isn't enough.

he's always grumpy even to you sometimes, he can't help it. it's how he always was from back then. you peer at the burned skin, abrasions across his body that looked almost infected from lack of care. you can feel your chest tighten as you step closer. he shifts away once he hears you walking towards him.

" Go away "

your lips pull tight in a line.

" I don't want it to get worse zack "

he snickers at that, almost in a mocking tone he bares his teeth.

" Worse? I'd say this is as worse as someone can get. or can you not clearly see how fucked my body is? "

you go to his side and he tenses up, the strong gaze on your face almost makes him turn away from you. he doesn't like to be seen like this. especially by you. reaching for the bandages in his hand, carefully, you wrap him up to cover the burns all over him.

" I see you. Nothing else. "

he stays silent at that point and so do you.

words aren't needed for a time like this. only the company of each other. as each layer of cloth goes around him again and again, he fights the urge to look at you, he's fighting the want to be bare and vulnerable to you. but it's ok if he's not ready.

" ....I'm a monster (y/n) "

a kiss on his shoulder shakes his heart.

" A monster? I don't know what that is. you're my lover zack. "
