From the time of her first memory, Nelly, or how she preferred to be called Nell, always knew she was different. When most kids were at the park playing, Nell was at home in her backyard playing alone, well that’s what everyone always thought, but really she was never alone. She had always had friends. You see Nell could see the dead.

Her mom had died when she was a few months old, so it was just her, and her father, though he was never home because of work. He would always leave before Nell woke up, and got home late after Nell had gone to bed. So during the day she was all alone with just the dead.

When Nell got into kindergarten, she came to the realization that only she could see what she could see. So instead of trying to make friends with children, she would keep to herself.

Soon after kindergarten passed, first grade came. Again she kept to herself, and didn’t interact with the other kids. This went on for the next ten years, and still her father worked late on most occasions, so she would barley ever see him. The thing that saddens her the most was that she hadn’t even told her father about the ability’s she possessed.

Over the years she had even noticed that her power’s to see the dead grew, she could now touch, and feel the dead, like as if they were living. Also they began to look more solid than they did as when she was much younger. It scared her sometimes because once in ninth grade she had mistaken a spirit as a person, and everyone began calling her crazy. So to take extra percussions, she would wait until a living person she knew approached the person she herself was going to ask a question.

It wasn’t until the first day of eleventh grade did she notice him. He was standing in the new student line with what was probably was his mom, to get his schedule. He had a big smile on his face, like as if he was so excited to do something. The thing was that there was something different about him. Something she couldn’t make sense of caught her eyes. He looked normal though, dark brown hair blue eyes, and basic height for kids are age. He actually wore clothes most of the kids who were popular wore; Aeropostal, Hollister that type of stuff.

Then she finally noticed it. The woman who had been standing next to him, and who she thought was his mother, wasn’t really. They had been making casual conversation like it was any other day, that’s why she hadn’t noticed it before. Protruding out of her back was two long glimmering lights. Nell could only see it only if she concentrated really hard. The lights then rose, and looked like they were stretching apart. Then Nell realized what they were. They were wings…

The woman’s face became grim, and then she looked towards Nell, and back to the boy, and said something. The boy then turned, and looked toward Nell, and smiled. He then waved to Nell. Nell then was now becoming uneasy, so she then turned and left.
