When I go through the door, everything goes black, there's no light anywhere at all. I feel a tug in my mind, as if I am trying to remember something. I have a strange feeling that this has all happened before. No memory surfaces, I'm disappointed, I want to remember my past. Maybe you don't have a past, a little voice says. I ignore it and try to focus on what is happening. I can feel a breath of fresh air, and suddenly light blinds me. I blink until my eyes have adjusted to the brightness. In front of me is a second door. This time it's wooden and unpainted.
Don't open it, the voice says again. I glance behind me, but there is nothing there. I have nowhere else to go. Slowly, I push the door open a fraction, and am met with a burst of sound. I hadn't realised that it was completely silent in the little corridor behind me. I can hear voices. I open the door the remainder of the way and glance around.
I have stepped into a different world. The same world, I think, but just...different. There is movement everywhere. People walk straight past me, not even noticing the open door in the white wall I am standing by. Maybe this happens a lot. I take a step forward and look around again. The door I stepped through came from a small white building, however in front of me there are bigger buildings - maybe twenty of them - and a large grassy field.
No one has noticed me yet, but hopefully someone will soon. I catch sight of a boy walking towards me. He looks around fifteen. Same age as me. He has long dark hair, falling into his eyes, which are a bright clear blue, like the sky above us. He is fairly tall, just a bit taller than me.
"Hi," he says when he reaches me, "I'm Chris."
"Hi," I reply.
"This must be strange for you. Well, I mean, it's strange for everyone, but it must be especially for you, seeing as you have no memory. But, this is only the beginning, a sort of camp - to teach you and then send you on your way..."
He keeps talking, but I don't register what he says. He knows that I have no memory. How does he know that? I can't concentrate.
"What did you say before?" I ask.
"I said that this is just the beginning."
"No before that. How did you know that I've lost my memory?"
"I was told. We need to go now. Please follow me."
I somehow know that this is not a request, it's an order. He expects me to follow him.
"Why?" I ask, not willing to trust a random stranger just yet.
"Because you're not going anywhere without me."
"Whatever." I say under my breath.
I decide to follow him. Just for now at least. I'm curious to see where he goes.
