The next morning, after what felt like the strangest night of my life, Tristan led us to the admissions office to finalize our enrollment at Vampire University. My mind was still reeling from everything that had happened, but there was no time to process it. We were here now, trapped in this place, and somehow we had to make it work.
As we entered the grand, Gothic-style building, the tall, narrow windows cast eerie shadows across the marble floors. The faint scent of old parchment and something metallic, like blood, lingered in the air. It was hard to believe this was a school. It felt more like stepping into an ancient castle.
“We’re actually doing this,” Lily muttered, nervously tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
Maya smiled half-heartedly. “At least we’re together, right? Safety in numbers.”
Tristan stood off to the side, his eyes scanning the room like he was constantly on alert. His presence brought me some comfort, even though his silence worried me. He seemed more distant this morning, as if something weighed heavily on him. I wanted to ask him what was going on, but I wasn’t sure he would tell me.
Finally, we approached the admissions counter, where an elegant woman with sharp features and cold, red eyes handed us our schedules. “Welcome to Vampire University,” she said, her voice smooth but emotionless. “Stick to your schedule, follow the rules, and you might survive your stay.”
Lily snorted under her breath, but I could tell she was more nervous than she let on. We all were.
We gathered around to compare schedules. To my relief, Maya, Jake, and Lily had almost identical classes—History of Vampire Clans, Blood Rituals 101, and a class on Vampire Ethics. I had the same courses too, except for one: Advanced Hematology, which I was scheduled to take alone.
“What’s that?” Maya asked, peering at my schedule.
I shrugged, trying to ignore the nervous flutter in my stomach. “No idea. But it sounds… intense.”
Lily frowned. “Why are you in a different class? Can’t we just stick together? This place gives me the creeps.”
Tristan, who had been listening silently, finally spoke up. “Advanced Hematology is for students with… unique blood types.” His eyes flicked toward me, something unreadable in them. “It’s not a class you can opt out of.”
Great. Of course, I was the one with the weird schedule. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this had something to do with what Tyron had said—that I was somehow different, that my blood was… special.
“You’ll be fine,” Tristan said softly, his voice meant to reassure me, but it only made my nerves worse. “Just… be careful.”
“Yeah, comforting,” I muttered under my breath.
We didn’t have time to dwell on it because soon, the bells chimed through the hall, signaling the start of classes. Maya, Jake, and Lily wished me luck before heading off in one direction, while I made my way toward the Advanced Hematology building, feeling Tristan’s eyes on me as I walked away.
The further I went, the darker the corridors became. The university was enormous, with twisting hallways that seemed designed to confuse. Eventually, I reached a tall, iron door engraved with symbols I didn’t recognize. The words Advanced Hematology were etched above it.
