-a cute one-shot that takes place after the battle of the star court and before mike and el know she is moving away :,)

The air was cooler now that it was October.

But even in the dark, with the dim light that shone on maple street, Mike wasn't bothered. His mind didn't even go to how much his legs hurt from peddling on his bike or how it had started to rain slightly. He had much more important things to worry about.

Specifically he was thinking about the one girl that had woken him up with her faint sobs coming over the super-com. It made his heart race, as he scrambled to pick up the radio and promised her that he would be there in a heartbeat.

It wasn't even a question of "should I go to see her?" Because the answer is always yes.

No matter how late, how far she was or how crazy it seemed like.

And she definitely needed him now, more than ever with what had recently happened.

Just as he had promised, his bike was soon on the damp ground outside of the Byers house and his finger tips were pushing up the glass window to el's bedroom.

Mike was careful not to be too loud, as he slipped in the window stealthily.

After all, this wasn't the first time he had snuck into elevens bedroom at night.

"El?" He called out.

Her room was lit softly with a lamp, casting a golden glow and he glanced around the room before noticing his girlfriend in the corner.

His heart broke.

This week had been so hard on all of them, but nothing could compare to how much pain el was in after losing hopper.

"Mike." She responded, softly. "You came."

He took a breath, she looked beautiful.

He knew now wasn't the time to complement her, but he couldn't help it. He was in love with her, and he would always wonder how a nerd like him managed to get a girl like her.

"Of course I came." He breathed. "When have I not come."

She smiled a little as he sat next next to her and he reached his hand out to hold her soft and shaky one.

He smiled at her, his eyes practically confessing how much he loved her.

She sighed. "I mean I knew you would come, I just- I guess I feel a little stupid, calling you so much these days, and I-I just feel like I'm being annoying."

Mike shook his head.

How could she ever think that?

"El, you could never-ever, in a million years be annoying to me, and I will always be here for you. Please don't feel bad, let me help you." He smiled softly at her, pulling her closer to him and turning her enough so he would wrap his arms around her waist from behind. She closed her eyes, realizing she felt tired and relaxed for the first time that night.

Mike nuzzled his chin into her neck and pressed a kiss there.

The way he hugged her from behind made her stomach turn, and she almost forgot why she was so upset in the first place. His strong arms made her feel more at home and safer than ever.

"El, I'm never going to stop protecting you and comforting you." He whispered softly.

She sighed. "Can we talk about it?"

His eyes widened. "Of course we can, only if you one hundred percent want too though, okay?"

She nodded and he noticed how a few more tears began to fall down her face and land on her shirt.

"I just was- missing him. A lot." She started. "I kept thinking about how I could have done something to save hopper, and I'm just so heartbroken, I don't know what to do. And my mind. It just goes off to these really, really dark places where I don't feel like I'm good enough to be alive."

The tears are falling out of her eyes faster now and mike squeezes her waist tighter and pulls her into him. Wanting to protect her with everything that he had in him.

"El." He said firmly, but still softly, in the tone that only he used when he was talking to her. "Please don't think that. Your good enough, your more than enough." Mikes eyes began to water and a few tears dripped down into el's hair. "El, your my whole world."

Mike panicked for a second, wondering how he could ever explain to her how much he meant to her. Wanting so badly to be a good boyfriend and to comfort her and help her and take every ounce of her pain away.

Mike didn't notice but her heart started to beat faster under her sweatshirt, the warmth of mikes arms around her made her heart sink. God, she loved him so very, very much.

"I'm sorry." He breathed. "I know it hurts but it's going to get better and I'm not going to leave, I promise you el. I'll be here for you for the rest of our lives, I won't leave your side."

"You promise?" She asked him, looking up into his eyes.

"I promise." He said. Pressing a quick kiss to her neck to reassure her.

He cuddled into her, kissing her neck again before letting his chin rest on her shoulder. Giving her a gentle squeeze. She let out an exhausted sigh.

"Tired, babe?" Mike asked, lovingly. As soon as the words left his lips he turned red.

El looked at him and let a smirk graze her face, biting her lip slightly. Her tears had dried and she seemed happier, more playful now.

Mike was still embarrassed.

"Sorry- I don't know- I'm not sure why I used that nickname-do you? Do you know what it means? It's just a nickname couples give each other-If doesn't mean your actually a baby." Mike scrambled, still blushing.

El let out a giggle that made mike want to melt.

"It's okay." She said shyly. "I like it. I saw it on tv. Sometimes boyfriends say it to their girlfriends." She paused. "Your a dork, Mike wheeler."

He blushed, letting out a laugh.

"Thanks for making the hard nights a little better." She yawned, settling into his lap, but not before twisting herself on him and giving mike a kiss.

Yes, he was sure he was head over heels in love with this girl.
