Black behind her as streaming hair
Hath the maid of elves.
Walk into her outstretched arms; and she will lead you where
Trees bow and rocks delve.
Glist'ning moonlight cups her face--
Graceful as a swan.
As the sun keeps its pace;
Cometh the beginning of dawn.
"Oh elf maid," I cry out,
"Walk by my again!"
But her head shakes as I shout,
"Doth love bring so much pain?"
Quiet is this night;
'Neath tall trees.
The moon gives much light--
Listen to humming humble bees.
