A class of 20 students stared at him, not too pleased to see the work listed on the blackboard. Half of the seniors were in Chemistry this semester, the other half signed up the second semester.

Most students seemed to think that they didn't need their diploma after years of practicing what they love. Jack had made it clear in the first half hour that a diploma made a huge difference in the jobs these kids could get later on, something Headmaster Loinsigh herself apparently explained at the assembly the first day every year for the high school students.

The assembly Jack had skipped so he could drop off his son.

Aside from a few students who actually took a genuine interest in chemistry, the overall tone was melancholy. Chemistry for art students. Not a big favorite.

"How many of you like watching horror movies?" Jack asked the class after the first hour when they were discussing the first chapter of the textbook.

Most of the class raised their hands, Matthew included.

"Do you know how important chemistry is to set designers who make the costumes and mix the fake blood and liquids? Many studios make their props and costumes. That requires science."

"That's not all necessary now," Matthew stated, pointing to the chapter. "We don't make stuff anymore. Almost all props, make up and other liquids are bought from China. Why would I need to know the chemical compositions of anything?"

"Yeah, it's not like we're going to use this in real life. I only know a few other students who are into special effects that require some knowledge for ratios and reactions and stuff," Susanna, another senior from his art class, stated. "I was hoping we could get this course turned into an elective hour. I would like to spend more time practicing the piano and cello."

"I need more time to dance."

After a few minutes of his students voicing their priorities, Jack lifted his hands, asking the class to settle down.

"Sorry Professor O'Connell," Matthew said with a not so sincere shrug. "We're artists, not nerds. Science is for nerds."

Little tousled hair punk! I can guarantee there is plenty of science behind the mouse holding your hair. Taking a few deep breathes, Jack, calmed himself before speaking.

"Chemistry and art aren't so different. Science encompasses all worldly matter and matter is used to make art, whether it be the human body dancing or paper and paint, to the components to make a computer and the energy used to bring that computer power."

That had everyone's attention, but their intrigue died the second they looked back down at the humongous textbook. "Maybe we could just watch videos in the library instead of reading so much?"

Wondering if that would work, he walked the class into the library, elated to see a section of computers open for use.

Once the class was sitting, he went to the website in the book, having the class watch the video. While it was easier than reading, it was clear their attention wasn't snared. Too many eyes dropping down from the screen to look at phones.

By the end of the day, Jack felt conflicted. He needed the class to feel encouraged about the workload to help them pass. There wasn't as much to distract them with the curriculum having only four courses, but the time would pass quickly. If they didn't feel motivated, he wasn't sure how he would get them to study enough to get excellent grades.
