It was the sun shining through a gap in my curtains that woke me up. I rubbed my eyes and looked over at the alarm clock on my desk. The digital numbers read 7:50. Oh crud! I slept through my alarm! I leapt out of bed and almost tripped on the duvet piled at my feet. Ripping through my wardrobe and knocking clothes off hangers, I started panicking when I couldnt find my school uniform. I stopped messing up my clothes when i realised that this school didn't require uniforms. I sighed in relief as I piulled out my favourite T-shirt and some random pair of pants. Hastily pulling on a sweater, I skipped the stairs two at a time.
My mom was sitting at the kitchen counter reading the newspaper when I entered the kitchen. "morning mom, sleep well?" I asked as I pulled a paper bag from the fridge that had my lunch in it. "I slept all right, no better than usual. Ready for your first day?" she smiled at me as I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm not nervous, but I cant say i'm excited either." she nodded while I grabbed my school bag from the lounge, I had pre-packed it the night before.
"Do you want a ride honey?" she asked as I walked back into the kitchen. I looked at my watch and shook my head. "I think i'll ride today, it looks like I have enough time. You just stay in and take a nap or something". My mother already had enough on her plate with her job, I didnt want her to worry and stress about me. She gave me a look of concern. "Are you sure? I can drive you. it wouldnt be a pr-" I kissed her forehead and shook my head again. "Mom. i'll be fine. I need to get going if I want to get there on time.". I sauntered to the front door and grabbed my keys from the bowl. I waved as went through the door and mom gave me a sad smile and waved back.
Last year, my dad couldn't make it here for my birthday. I love him, but he puts his buisness before his family. So, because he couldn't be there, he sent one of his employees to our house with a vespa. It was my 16th birthday present from him. I remember the joy I felt when I first got to ride on it. I smiled at the memory as I climbed on. Right now, i had about 15 minutes to get to school. I turned the ignition on and drove slowly out of the driveway.
I had visited the school before during the summer holidays. I recieved a tour from one of the teachers. His name was Mr Stritcher or something. I was enjoying the wind in my hair over the bridge when my vespa suddenly stopped. I groaned and pulled over. I wheeled the vespa over to the path so I could check if something was wrong. Over the side of the bridge, I spotted two people doing what looked like digging in a pile of rocks. Some people are weird. I tried the engine again and it started. I smiled and put my helmet back on and started driving again to the school.
I arrived with about five minutes to spare. I parked my vespa in a parking spot close to the front doors. I stood in awe at the size of the school. Students passed me in small groups or large crowds and entered the school halls. I felt a hand on my shoulder as I watched people pass by. I looked back and the teacher that gave me the tour was standing beside me. He gave me a kind smile. "Ah, Miss Anderson. Lovely to see you again.". I returned his smile and said "Thank you. Its nice to see you aswell Mr....". "Stricker. Dont worry, most student have trouble remembering my name on the first day. if youll follow me, ill take you to my office where we can assign someone to give you another small refresher tour.".I nodded and followed him through the halls.
as I passed, a lot of people stared at me. Some were off-putting stares, some were stares of wonder and others where just staring. Mr strickler held open the door to his office and I enetred. He motioned at me to sit in a seat opposite to his desk. "If you will please wait here, i'll go and fetch one of our trustworthy students to show you around.". I nodded and smiled as he closed the door and left me alone. I looked around Mr Stricklers office. He had a lot of decorative ornaments on his shelves and on his desk was a stack of books. I deduce that all of the books were about history based on the titles.
Just as I reached out to grab one of the books, I heard the door click. I looked back in my chair and Mr Strcikler was standing by the door with raven haired boy in a blue hoodie. "Miss Anderson, this is Jim Lake. He will be showing you around until recess." The boy looked at me and gave a shy smile. I stood up and walked over to them and through the door. Strickler closed the door to his office and Jim and I were left alone in the empty halls. Breaking the silence, I spoke up. "So...where are we going first?"
