Maddison:Why do we need to sneak out of the house if we're not doing anything wrong until we sneak onto the subway?
Mia:You think you're ready to just walk by your parents?
Maddison:I think I'm ready.
Mia:Let me see your face as you walk by your parents.
Maddison:(makes a face)
Mia:Why are you making that face at us, Riley?
Maddison:Because I'm sneaking out to the subway. (points to window) Out the window
Mia:Let's go. (Her and Maddison climb out of the window)
Maddison:(To Zac) Daddy! What are you doing out here?
Mia:(To Zac) Being smarter than me; how come you're always smarter than me? (her and Maddison climb back into the room)
Zac:(climbs in window and says to Maddison) Here's what I'm thinking. (Mia and Maddison sit on bed) It's not your world yet. It's still my world. Because if it was your world, Mia would have you on the subway already, thinking you put something over on me. But you didn't. Know how I know? Look at you. You're right here.
Maddison:How long do I have to live in my father's world?
Zac:Until you make it yours. Maddison, do you know what I want more than anything? Go ahead. Make it yours.
Maddison:I will. And when I do, will you still be there for me?
Ariana:(enters the room) Right here. We'll be right here.
Maddison:(exits out the door with Mia)
Interior- Bleecker Street Subway Station. Mia and Maddison enter.
Dweezil:(Playing garbage cans as drums, as Mia and Maddison dance along)
Mia:Dweezil!
Dweezil:Mia! Who's the new chick?
Maddison:Chick! Down here I'm a chick! (Whispers to Mia and says) No wonder my parents don't want me on the Subway.
Mia:(Starts walking, and Maddison follows)
Gretchen:You're slouching, Mia.
Mia:Thanks, Gretchen! (Poses, walks forward, then to the side)
Maddison:(Follows/copies on what Mia does)
Interior- New York City Subway. Mia and Maddison are inside.
Maddison:(applies lip gloss)
Mia:Woah, Maddie, you don't do lip gloss.
Maddison:Oh! What I forgot to mention is that I'm completely reinventing myself. I ride the Subway now, I have kiwi lips now, and I'm just as cool as you now!
Mia:(looks over Maddison's shoulder) Yeah, let's see how cool you can be when you look at him.
Maddison:(Turns around)
Hayes Grier:(Smiles at Maddison)
Maddison:(awkwardly smiles, then turns to Mia and weirdly giggles)
Mia:Yeah, you're gonna need some lessons. Let me show you everything you need to know about boys and girls. (Walks over to Hayes and says to him) Hi, I'm Mia. You're really cute. We should hang out sometime. You make me happy. You don't pay enough attention to me. This isn't working out. It's you, not me. We can still be friends, not really. (Walks away) He's available. We just broke up.
Maddison: Are you okay? Do we need to talk about it?
Mia:You still wanna be like me?
Maddison:I want to be exactly like you. I think too much and you don't think at all.
Mia:See? You get me, so let's not think. (Unlatches Maddison's hand from the bar)
Maddison:WOOooah(falls into Hayes's lap) Hi. We were just talking about you. You used to go out with my friend, Mia.
Hayes:I'm Hayes.
Maddison:I love it.
Evelyn:(enters the subway and stands in front of Maddison) Perhaps someone would like to give their seat to someone older. (Hayes stands up) Not you, sweet potato pie.
Maddison:(Stands up and leans in to whisper to her and says)Please don't make me move. I just wanna see where this goes.
Evelyn:I've just worked a 12-hour shift and I just wanna see where this (Points at her booty) goes. Mmmkay?
Maddison:[sighs] 'Mmkay. (Walks to Mia and says to her) That was great!
Mia:You're welcome.
Maddison:What if that was the best moment of my life? What if nothing ever happens to me again?
Mia:(smiles, and unlatches Maddison's hand again)
Maddison:WOOoooah(falls into Evelyn's lap)
Evelyn:(Looks at Maddison and says to Hayes) It's for you. (Puts her into Hayes's lap)
Title sequences- Then- Interior- John Quincy Adams Middle School hallway. Mia and Maddison are at their lockers.
Maddison:Did you have trouble with the homework?
Mia:Piece of cake.
Maddison:You didn't do it, did you?
Mia:I don't even know where my books are.
Maddison:(Opens her backpack, and hands Mia her books) Here. And they're heavy. (Bell rings, and Maddison and enters a classroom with Mia) You have to do the homework, Mia. This teacher's insane, a total nut job. I think there's something seriously wrong with him.
Zac:Hi, honey.
Maddison:Hi, Daddy.
Zac:You're late to your father's class.
Mia:Oh, don't worry, Mr. Efron, you wrote her a note.
Zac:I did?
Mia:You did. (Hands the note to Maddison)
Maddison:(To Zac) You did. (Hands the note to Zac)
Zac:(Reading the note) Maddison's late. Deal with it. Oh, you got my signature down pretty good this time.
Mia:Oh it was easy, you write like a girl. (Takes her seat and so does Maddison)
Zac:(To his class) Okay, let me get back to jamming some learning in your heads, The Civil War.
Mia:The Civil Bore.
Zac:Thank you, future Mini-Mart employee of the month.
Mia:Would I be making more money than you?
Zac:(Pauses and then says to his class) The Civil War! Anybody?
Maddison:A war we fought against ourselves.
Zac:What, you actually studied it?
Maddison:No, I'm actually living in it. (Smacks her head on her desk)
Brent Rivera:(To Zac's class) People, people, are we here to learn or not?
Zac:What do you mean, Brent?
Brent:I've been in love with Maddison since the first grade. But I'm also equally in love with Mia. Some might say the great mystery of the universe is who's gonna be the first Mrs. Brent.
Mia:(Turns around and looks at Brent and says) You don't want this.
Brent:Bring it on.
Maddison:(To Maya) I always thought that he'd wind up with back-of-the-class Brenda. (Everyone turns around)
Brenda:(Waves)
Brent:(Disgusted) Yuck!
Zac:Actually, the great mystery of the universe is how you can love two women the same who couldn't possibly be more different.
Maddison:We're not so different.
Brent:(raises his hand and says to Zac) May I overstep my bounds, sir?
Zac:You always do. (Switches places with Brent)
Brent: (flips over the name tag on Zac's desk so it says "Brent" instead of "Mr. Efron" and Brent says to Zac's class, he vicisiously slams his hands on Maddison's desk and says) Maddison, is the sun. Warm and bright and lights up my whole day. (He goes over to Mia's desk and do the same thing what he did to Maddison and says) Mia, is the night. Dark and mysterious. And the night has always been a mystery to me. Because I go to bed at 7:30. How can I love these two different women? How can I not? (Bows) Thank you, I am Brent! (Goes back to his seat as Zac goes to the front of his class and switches the name tag back to his name)
Zac: (To his class) So, we were indeed trying to find out who we were, as a people. Who am I? What should I be? History shows that bad things happen when you don't know who you are.
Hayes:(Enters at great timing right after Zac/Mr. Efron finishes talking)
Zac:Who are you? I don't know who you are.
Maddison: (whispers to Mia) Subway boy!
Hayes: (To Zac) I'm Hayes Grier, from Charlottesville, North Carolina (A/N Or Mooresville North Carolina, Idk which one he's from or born in so you decide). (Hands Zac a note)
Zac: Oh. New student, Mr. Grier?
Hayes: Yes, sir.
Zac: Great. You're just in time for today's assignment. Have a seat.
Hayes: (sits in the seat behind Maddison)
Maddison: ( turns around and looks at Hayes)
Zac: (To his class) Okay, so we... (walks over to Maddison, and turns her head forward) So, I'd like you guys to open your books to page 48. (Everybody turns to page 48) Now, I'd like you to turn to page 1. (Everybody turns to page 1) Now, I'd like you to read from page 1 to 48. (everyone groans) Oh, too bad on you. Okay, so for tonight's assignment, I'd like you to write me a three page essay on anything. Anything at all, that you guys believe in so strongly, you fight for it.
Mia: That. I'd fight for no homework. I come here every day; why can't you teach me everything I need to know while I'm here.
Maddison: Woo! (Looks at Zac and says to him) Not woo!
Mia: He gets our days, let's take back our nights. No homework, more freedom! (To Cory's students) Who's with me? (With the class as the class shouts with her and says) No homework, more freedom! No homework, more freedom! No homework, more freedom! (Whispers to Maddison) This is it, kid. You wanna be like me? Stand up. (Starts chanting) No homework, more freedom! No homework, more freedom! Maddison: (Stands up)
Zac:What are you doing?
Maddison: I'm making a choice about who I want to be, about whose world I want it to be.
Zac: Maddison, I know you. You know exactly who you are.
Maddison: Then who am I, Dad?
Zac: You're just like me.
Maddison: Oh, yeah? Would you do this? (Starts chanting) No homework, more freedom! No homework, more freedom! (To Brent) Brent, are you with us or not? No homework, more freedom! No homework, more freedom!
Brent: My education? Or my women? My education? Or my women? My education? Or my women? (Gets dazed and says to Zac) Oh, it's happening again, sir. (Faints in Zac's arms)
Interior- Efron's apartment. Ariana (Ariana Grande) is in the family room.
Maddison: (Enters and says to Ariana) Ma!
Zac: (Enters and says to Ariana) Ma!
Ariana: (To Zac and Maddison) Whatever this is, do not put me in the middle of the two people I love equally. Just kidding! (To Maddison) Come here, honey. (hugs Maddison)
Maddison: My teacher followed me home. Can we keep him? Can we keep him? Please say no.
Zac: (To Ariana) She walked out of my class. She's trying to be Mia.
Ariana: (To Maddison) Why would you want to be Mia?
Maddison: Because she's cool, she has a wild side. She does what she wants.
Ariana: But you're such a good person!
Maddison: Who cares about that? (To Zac and Ariana) Do you really think I'm one of those girls who follows all of the rules and never gets into trouble?
Zac: I was hoping.
Maddison: (To Zac and Ariana) Do you think I'm well-raised?
Ariana: Half!
Maddison: (To Zac and Ariana) How important is it that you don't know me at all? (Exit to her room)
Ariana: (To Cory and tries to do Zac's impression saying) Let's get married. Let's have a kid. Let's have another kid.
Zac: Well, you listened to me, you big stupid.
Interior- Efron's apartment. August and Maddison are sitting on a window seat.
Maddison: Am I the type of person who always plays it safe? Is this who I'm going to be for the rest of my life? Am I ever going to take a risk that changes my destiny?
August: (To himself) Do bears know how to smile? Why is cake always so delicious? Will my drawings ever get any better?
Maddison: Are you making fun of me?
August: No, I think just like you because we're twins.
Maddison: We're not twins.
August: (To Ariana) Mom! (Exits Maddison's room)
Interior- John Quincy Adams Middle School cafeteria. Mia and Maddison are sitting down to eat lunch.
Mia: (Talking about Hayes) Aww, look at him looking for a place to fit in.
Maddison: You think he'll sit with us?
Mia: (slides over so there's a chair between her and Maddison)
Brent: (sits in the chair between Mia and Maddison and says to them) Ladies.
Mia and Maddison: (In unison) Brent.
Brent: Interesting lunch line dilemma. (Looks at Mia) Sloppy joe, (Looks at Maddison) or chicken pot pie? (Looks at Mia) Or sloppy joe, (Looks at Maddison) or chicken pot pie?
Mia: Is that all you got?
Brent: That's it! Same time tomorrow! (Leaves the table)
Mia: (To Maddison) There he is! Invite him to sit down! (Maddison moves to the seat next to Mia)
Maddison: With words?
Mia: You're ready for this.
Maddison: What do I say?
Mia: Hey, Hayes. Looking for somebody special?
Maddison: I can't say that!
Mia: Hey, Hayes. Looking for somebody?
Maddison: Too forward.
Mia: Hey, Hayes.
Maddison: Like we're on a first name basis?
Mia: Hey.
Maddison: Hey.
Hayes: Hey back. (Sits down)
Maddison: (Pauses) Hi. You're sitting here.
Hayes: Is that okay?
Maddison: (Thumbs up) Can you excuse me for just one sec? (Turns to Mia and they scream for a split second)
Zac: (Appears next to Hayes and says to Hayes) How ya doing?
Maddison: Dad, you have a choice here. You can either understand that this is just a boy talking to me in the cafeteria...
Zac: I'm gonna do whatever you say next.
Maddison: But this is so innocent!
Zac: Honey, fathers don't see anything as innocent. We see it as...what's the opposite of innocent?
Mia: (Raises her hand) Right here!
Maddison: (To Zac) Please don't embarrass me.
Zac: I'm just gonna talk to Mr. Grier about geography. (To Hayes) You know, I've been to a lot of places. Never been to North Carolina, though. What part of North Carolina is the lake you go to?
Hayes: That'd be Lake Norman, sir.
Zac: Great! Let's go right now! (Drags Hayes's chair away from the table)
Hayes: (Waves to Maddison)
Maddison: (Sadly/ Embarrassingly waves back to Hayes and leaves table with Mia and says to her) So, did you do the homework?
Mia: No, I didn't do the homework. The question on everybody's kiwi lips is, did you do the homework?
Maddison: No, I'm one of the founding members of the Homework Rebellion. You think I did my homework?
Mia: I think you did mine, too.
Maddison: I did. I did and I really liked it.
Mia: Maddison, don't save me.
Maddison: What?
Mia: Let me be me. (Brent walks by and Mia says to him) Oh. You got two desserts?
Maddison: (To Brent) Angel's food cake...
Mia: (To Brent) And Devil's food cake. Let me guess who's who.
Brent: (To Maddison and Mia) Hey, Brent's just hungry. Not everything is about you.
Interior- John Quincy Adams Middle School history class. Hayes is sitting down in the desk behind Maddison.
Maddison: Hi. I'm glad you're back.
Hayes: Hi. Me too.
Zac: (Approaches Maddison and Hayes) Hi. Apparently you have a better sense of direction (gestures to Maddison) than I anticipated. (Maddison turns back and puts her hands on her head, and Zac does the "I'm watching you" signal) You are a really good-looking guy. (Pauses and goes to the front of his classroom says to his class) Okay. So, today we're gonna find out if anybody here believes in something so strongly, they'd fight for it. (To Mia) Mia.
Mia: Yes, sir.
Zac: Present your homework.
Mia: Can't do that, sir.
Zac: Why not?
Mia: Didn't do my homework, sir.
Zac: Why not?
Mia: That's what I'm fighting against, sir.
Brent: Oh, this could go on for a while. (Puts on a sleep mask) Farkle Farkle Farkle Farkle. Farkle Farkle Farkle Farkle.
Maddison: (To Zac) I didn't do my homework, either.
Zac: Oh, really?
Maddison: Yeah. We're the same, now. I don't believe in homework.
Zac: Guess what, Maddison? That doesn't make you the same as Mia at all.
Mia: (Raises her hand) I have something to say.
Zac: Wow, I don't know what to do, I've never seen this before. The floor's yours, Ms. Seglee.
Mia: (Stands up and says to Brent) Get up, Brent. (Pulls on his sleep mask) You're gonna wanna be awake for this.
Brent: (Takes sleeping mask off stands up and says) Is it our honeymoon?
Mia: No, you missed that. Now it's time to hand in our essays.
Brent: Oh! Brent goes first, Brent always goes first! (Brent exits the classroom)
Mia: (To Zac's class) Alright, everybody who did their homework, put it on your desk. (She starts collecting the homework)
Zac: Careful there, Ms. Seglee.
Maddison: (To Mia) Are you sure about this?
Mia: I got this.
Maddison: Okay.
Brent: (Enters the classroom with an extravagant project and says to Zac's students) The branding of Atlanta led to the end of the Civil War, and of peace. I believe that peace is worth fighting for. (Mia takes a sparkler off of his project and Brent says to her) Hey, that's a pivotal part of my diorama! (Mia takes another sparkler) And there goes Virginia.
Mia: (To Zac's class) The burning of the homework led to the end of the Homework Rebellion, because there was no more homework. (Stands on a chair, about to burn the homework with the sparklers)
Zac: (Takes the homework from Mia) Alright, alright. That's far enough, Mia. I get it.
Mia: (Chanting with the class) No homework, more freedom! (The fire touches the sprinklers, which sets them off, then the fire alarm rings) Okay, so those work.
Brent: Is this all part of your presentation, or is this actually going on? (Everybody flees the classroom)
Hayes: (Holding his jacket over him and Maddison and says to her) Why didn't you stop your friend?
Maddison: That's not what I do anymore!
Hayes: You're better than that!
Maddison: I'm just letting her be her.
Brent: (Runs to the front of the classroom, climbing onto Zac)
Zac: (To Mia) Ms. Seglee, you have detention. The principal will determine if it goes farther than that. (Mia steps down) (Zac says to Maddison) Ms. Efron, please leave.
Maddison: I deserve detention, too!
Zac: No, you don't. You didn't do anything. And Because you didn't do anything, your best friend is in very big trouble. (To Brent) Alright Brent, you can get down now.
Brent: Well, you're actually quite comfortable, sir.
Zac: Thank you... Get off!
Brent: Brent isn't going anywhere!
Interior- John Quincy Adams Middle School hallway. Mia and Maddison are at their lockers.
Zac: (Enters, with Brent still on him) Down, Brent. (Brent gets down)
Mia: You're looking at us pretty hard there, Mr. Efron.
Maddison: (To Zac) I just wanna stand by my girl.
Zac: You missed the moment to stand by your girl. You were so busy trying to be her, Maddie, you forgot the best thing you can do for her is be you. Maddison, take Brent for a walk.
Maddison: (looks at Mia for a few seconds and exits with Brent)
Zac: (To Mia) Listen. For as long as I can remember, it's always been Maddison and Mia. Now, I always believed a friend helps another friend out of trouble, not into it.
Mia: I'm sorry.
Zac: I am too, because you go too far. Do you understand me?
Mia: (She's on the verge of crying and says to Zac's as her voice cracks) I have nobody at home who helps me with my homework. (She exits sadly and angry or mad)
Interior- New York City Subway. Mia and Maddison are inside.
Mia: Maddison?
Maddison: Yeah?
Mia: If we can't hang out with each other as much anymore, don't worry about it.
Maddison: Wait, why would...
Mia: He's going to make you end our friendship.
Maddison: He said that?
Mia: He's really upset with me.
Maddison: He loves you.
Mia: I don't think so anymore. I just want you to know that I get it wouldn't be your fault.
Evelyn: (Claps and says to Maddison and Mia) Bee-you-ti-ful! You two little bumblebees got a sweet thing going, but where's your hunk? (Pauses) You ain't got no hunk, you ain't got no story!
Mia: (To Maddison) I haven't been your good friend.
Maddison: You're my best friend.
Evelyn: (To Mia) She's your best friend. Best friends are important. I have a best friend. I'm not talking to her right now.
Mia: (To Maddison) I go too far. And I don't think that's gonna stop. I'm bad for you.
Maddison: He said that?
Mia: He will. (Subway stops) This is your stop. Don't be me. You don't go as far as me.
Maddison: No. (Mia leads her off the Subway) No!
Evelyn: (To Mia) No! Do not push her off this train. (Maddison turns to leave) You do not push your best friend off the train. (Door closes)
Maddison: I'm not you. (Turns around, then opens two doors)
Evelyn: (Talking about Maddison) Ooh, she's back! That little girl pushed those doors open with the power of love!
Maddison: (To Mia) You're not allowed to abandon our friendship. I would never do that.
Mia: Maddison, I'm pushing you away because I'm not good for you anymore.
Maddison: Only I decide that. You know why?
Mia: Why?
Maddison: Because if this is my world now, the first person I want in it is you.
Mia: You're gonna save me, aren't you?
Maddison: I am. (Runs out of the Subway with Mia)
Interior- Efron's apartment. Mia and Maddison enter.
Maddison: Where is he?
August and Ariana: (Point at Zac)
Maddison: (To Zac) There is no way I'll let you break up my friendship with Mia.
Zac: Is that what you think I want, Maddie?
Maddison: No. What you said you really want is for me to make the world my own. And you want me to do my homework. Well, I'm doing it right now. Here's what I think is worth fighting for. This is my best friend. She's gonna get me into trouble, and I'm gonna get us out of it. And I did, because here we are. Look at us, Dad. We're right here. My Civil War is over, Dad. I won. What happens now?
Interior- Bleecker Street Subway Station. August, Zac, Brent, Hayes, Mia, Maddison, and Ariana are gathered.
Zac: Friends, family, and all you other subterranean mole people. We're here today to celebrate Maddison being Maddison. Now, some may call this a New York City Subway pass. (To Maddison) But you, Maddison, can consider this a ticket to the world.
Maddison: You think I'm ready?
Ariana: You showed us you are.
Zac: (To Maddison) Maddie, I've already met the world. It's your turn.
Maddison: (Smiles, then takes the card)
Hayes: (To Brent) Hey, this isn't so different from North Carolina. Look, there's a baby horse.
Brent: That's a rat. (Gretchen and mylifeaseva walks by and Brent says to them) Ladies.
Gretchen and Eva: Brent.
Mia: (To Maddison) So, where do you wanna go?
Maddison: Don't know. Big world.
Mia: Ours now?
Maddison: Yeah, but my dad did say I have to be home by five.
Mia: Don't worry. He wrote you a note. (Hands Maddison a note as they walk into the Subway)
Subway Announcer: Next stop, Astor Place, 14th Street, and the world.
Interior- Bleecker Street Subway Station. Mia and Maddison exit the Subway, where August, Zac, and Ariana are waiting.
Maddison: You guys came back and waited for us?
Mia: Hey, we told you we were always gonna be here for you.
Zac: (To Maddison) Yeah, Maddison. It's not so easy handing over the world without making sure everything's gonna be okay. (Turns around and imagines George Feeny on the wall poster)
Mr. Feeny: Well done, Mr. Efron.
Cory: (smiles, stops imagining George Feeny, turns around and leaves with Ariana, August, Maddison and Mia hand in hand)
