The lights from the lampposts refracted into the car window as we passed by each one. The stoplight went red to green, saving us from mad late-night drivers. The sounds blaring from the clubs filled the silence of the night as some shops are still open, served by workers who seemed to have a bad tiring day. Homeless people were already on their improvised beds on old benches or even in the sidewalk floor covered with disassembled cartons. There were still people roaming around the streets, some are on the way home from work, some are just on their way to their night job and some are just people who needed some fresh air.
Gaia turned up the radio and put in a The Vamps album CD. Their playlist soon started through the speakers of our car, with Gaia’s head bobbing into the tune and beat. At least she had found something to entertain herself. I, too, was partly entertained but what happened today is really bugging the hell out of me.
First; babysitting two hyperactive twins, second; saving a kid from getting hit by a speeding car, three; getting bad bruises from it, four; getting evicted from our apartment and five; Gaia losing her job and finding out how douche her ex-boyfriend is. Five problems in a day, and I still survived. Do Guiness have a spot for this?
My dad was silently driving, going into different directions that I sooned noticed that was heading in the South part of the town which people who loved the woods lived. There were average, poor and rich people residing in there for it is the most peaceful part of the town.
“Where are we staying?” Gaia asked him with no hesitation as she finished chugging down the water from her tumbler. Dad was still texting on his phone, I know that it’s illegal to text while driving but well sometimes he could be a badass. He just ended a phone call before we got into the car and his face showed relief. Is this some kind of good news?
“Your Aunt let us stay in her place for awhile since she’s alone and your cousin is in a business trip for awhile and she needs some company.” He took a quick glace at Gaia, and to me by the rearview mirror. Glad to know that we’ll be not sleeping with the homeless people tonight. Aunt Hailey is really nice of hers to let us stay in, she lives in the South part of the town with her daughter who is already working. His husband died while fighting for our country four years ago. She was the only sibling of our dad, so guess she’s our only hope for seeking help.
A few moments later, we arrived by a series of small vintage houses aligned perfectly. Their lawns seemed to perfect and the plants bloomed healthy. There were also a number of trailer-like homes, with a picnic table infront and an old car. Behind of each house were the massive welcoming trees of the woods. Of course, there will be no lions or tigers of such in here since the woods served as a divider from the residence and the other town.
Passing by numerous houses. We stopped by a familiar house with blooming tulips in the front garden box. The porch, there stood an old rocking chair moving with the sway of the wind. We parked in its small driveway and one light of the house opened up. Excitement obviously ran into my vines, I never seen Aunt for almost a year, actually. She went to Ireland for a vacation for a few months where my graduation and senior year also happened.
