A cat sat silently at the sparkling pool's edge. After a moment, she moved closer and lapped up some of the star-filled water, closed her amber eyes, and waited.
When she opened her eyes again, she found herself in a beautiful forest, so unlike her home which was full of shadows and darkness. This forest was full of light and singing with life. Sitting in the center of a clearing, she looked up to the full, bright moon. Four stars, arranged in a square, grew brighter, then started floating down to her, around her. They hovered a small distance from the ground, then slowly turned into cats with stars in their fur.
The small cat was no surprised, though she should have been. She was barely a moon old, but still had no name. She watched as four warriors of StarClan appeared near her.
A broad-faced she-cat with blue-gray fur padded around the kit, purring. "Little one, you should not have come here on your own."
The kit raised her head. "But I do not fear," she mewed. "And I have to know something, BlueStar."
"Your name?"
"And things."
"All in due time." A dark gray cat with yellow eyes rose to her paws to stand beside BlueStar. "You young cats are always so impatient," she purred.
"I want to stay here, YellowFang. I am not wanted in ShadowClan. Not even enough to have a name!" the kit blurted.
A magnificent golden tabby stepped closer to the small cat. "We know of your troubles, but you cannot stay for long. However, you will be wanted and taken in in ThunderClan. Do you know what cats are there?"
The kit blinked. "Yes, LionHeart."
The tom nodded. "Good. Who do you want as a mentor?"
The kit shrugged. "I like LeafPool, but I would really rather not be a full medicine cat. Maybe FireStar..."
The last cat, a graceful, beautiful tortoiseshell, mewed gently with, "We can make that happen. You can be mentored by both cats. You could be like BrightHeart, warrior and medicine cat."
The brave kit looked up. "Thank you, SpottedLeaf. Thank you, all of you. But what will my name be?"
BlueStar smiled gently and brushed her pelt against the young cat. "Good luck, MoonKit. StarClan will always be with you.
MoonKit blinked, then nodded and closed her eyes. Her black pelt shone silver, and her eyes flashed an icy blue. The four StarClan warriors melded with her, and everything went dark.
