The sun had gone down and I was the last one left after the long rainy day. The rain was just a light patter on the roof tops of London town. I was putting up the chairs when someone banged on the window.
I jumped in shock. My heart leaped out of my chest and splattered onto the black and white tiled floor. Metaphorically.
I turned my head expecting to see a big gang or a large man with a bottle of acid in his black gloved hands. I was almost scared to look.
But it was just Scott.
I sighed heavily and walked to the door. Opening it and punching his arm. “You absolute terror. You scared the hell out of me!”
“Sorry, baby,” he smiled and grabbed my shoulders “But you owe my a coffee.”
I shook my head “You should have come when we were open. I have to clean and lock up now-” I complained.
Interrupting the end of my sentence, he cried “Please~!”
I knew he would never stop wining if I didn’t listen to him so I gave up and nodded at him.
“Yay!” he cheered he placed his elbows on the counter and his chin in his hands.
I walked behind the coffee counter and started to make him just an average latte.
“I say that stranger again today. The one I was talking about the other day.” I stared my story.
“The one who reeked of melancholy?” He said in a sarcastic tone taking a jab at what I said the other day.
“Yes. But he knew my name. It maybe because he was speaking to my boss about the staff or he knows me But I-"
“or you name tag.” The blonde tapped the name tag on my shirt.
I looked down to see my name tag. I completely forgot about “That’s settled then he only said my name because it was on my name tag.”
I finished making Scott’s latte I slid it to him with the elegance of a bartender and I continued to re-clean the bar. Scott put all the chairs up the job I was doing before he scared me. I went into the closet to the bucket and mop before sweeping up. After I started to mop up the floor. Scott stayed till I was done he said something about waiting for someone.
That was when I heard the thunder of motor bikes roaring down the dark road. I was doing the last finishing touches of cleaning when they arrived. Scott grinned and headed to the door opening it for the masked rider.
I thought back to the stranger. He seemed to wear the same colours on his motorbike suit I watched as Scott met him the rain and pulled him in to meet me.
This made me scared I had heard the rumours about gangs maybe this could all be one, my knees started to tremble maybe they’re secretly plotting to take me away and kil-
“Mia Sawyer!” A familiar voice he ripped off his helmet with mad excitement “No fucking way is that you!”
“Jay! Oh my god I haven’t seen you since you kicked off in our Geography Exam.” I had a big grin on my face.
He still shaved his head but now he was decorated in tattoos I saw one on his neck and on the side of his head. Jay ever since I can remember has been decked out with muscles he was the strongest boy in out year and an absolute Mad dog. He was the schools typical British bad boy. Shouting at teachers, dealing drugs, smoking behind the bins, getting into fights, lacking in hygiene but always getting the girl.
“Yeah! Girl, you grew up good,” he rubbed his chin “What are you doing in London?”
“I go to university the other side if the city. I also live down the road.”
“What! I live there!” he laughed.
“You’ll have to come over for tea some time,” I thought for a moment “So why are you here? In London I mean?”
I felt a little bad for Scott he had completely disappeared into the corner of our eyes and had entered the awkward mess of just standing there.
“You know, all the old business.” He swayed with a little smirk his clear eyes glancing off then returning to me “You still friends with Lizzie she used to be my best costumer?” His eyes held a sadness behind them.
“Yeah she’s my roommate.” I looked to the ground then back to him. It was a slight awkward since he and Liz used to date but she broke it off because she was moving away.
“Well could you tell her, I’m in town and 6 floors down from you.” he headed to the door only now I realised he swayed a lot as if he had too much to drink.
BEEP!
The second man on the motor bike punched the horn. I had also completely forgot him. He made a gesture with his hands.
“Now if you’ll excuse me, come on Scott. I’ll see you around Mia.” He smirks once more.
“Bye, sweet heart.” Scott wiggled his fingers at me and disappeared out off the cafe.
“Bye you two.” I smiled and waved. I finished mopping up the rest of the cafe floor.
I turned off the lights and locked up pulling down the shutters and locking them too.
It was very cold tonight. My breath glowed in the orange of the street lamp and my stomach made a loud noise crying to be filled.
I decided to ring Liz, I pulled my phone out of my bag the bright screen hurt my eyes and I stared into the map of apps. Tapping gently to find my way to he number.
The phone rang and I pressed the cold screen to the side of my face. Patiently, I waited for her voice.
“Hey.”
“I’m off my shift now, I was gonna pick up some food what would like?”
“Please could we have Chinese!”
“I can’t afford that, I’ll just grab some pot noodles from extra. Okay?”
“Okay...” I could hear her wining through the phone.
“Love you.”
“Love you too.” She hung up I stuffed my phone away and walked down the road to the corner shop.
I couldn’t help to think back earlier. Obviously that stranger knows me. He must have read my name tag or maybe The boss told me his name.
But more peculiarly why did those two men scatter when he entered the cafe? Also why did he dress in a similar motor bike suit to Jay? The more I thought about this man the more I got confused.
I thought again He must I’m have some connection to Jay maybe they know each other or they shop in the same place. Now that I think about it he was warring the same type and brand of jacket as Scott wears. So all three of them may know each other.
Maybe they’re just friends but I’ve known Jay since primary school maybe the stranger is a class mate I can’t remember or-
“That’s £3, please.” The man at the counter smiled. Through the whole time I was thinking I had managed to pick up all six pot noodles.
“Oh, sorry I forgot something.” I walked back to the fridge and picked up a four pack of Smirnoff ice and a box of wine the two only cost £5.
It was my last day of uni in the week and we normally have a drink. But it was coming to the end of September so I was thinning out on money so we would be going out Saturday instead of today.
I headed back to the counter and let him scan the rest of the items. I paid him and put the noodles and alcohol into my bag “Good night.”
“Good night.” The shop keeper said.
I walked back onto the cold streets and headed to my apartment.
What was I thinking about again?
