She couldn't pack anything. Jason would know if she started packing.
She didn't know where they would go either. She didn't have any family and Jason had kept them to isolated for her to have any friends. Not good friends anyway. Not anyone she could trust.
But they were leaving.
She had decided she would take Dakota to the nearest hospital and get help there. But they had to get away. So she waited. She hoped Jason would drink and pass out. Then they could take the car.

"I'm going to the store."
She looked up at him. He was what? Oh my gosh! This was perfect! He would be gone! He had the car but he would be gone! They could get away.
"Ok." She said sounding as disinterested as possible.
He stared at her.
Her heart pounded. Did he know what she planned to do? Was this a trick?
"I need the fricken keys bitch!"
She scrambled to find the keys and give them to him.
"Sorry. Here you go."
He took the keys and left with even glancing back.
She watched him pull out of the driveway and waited till he was around the corner then she ran to the room, grabbed the key off the headboard, and threw open the closet door.
She opened Dakota's cuffs as quickly and gently as possible.
"Dakota. Sweetheart we have to go! He's gone right now but he could come back we have to go!"
The boy didn't look good at all. He was pale and hot with fever. He was squinting against the light. She wanted to be more gentle and ease him into it but they had to go now!
"Dakota! I know you don't feel well but we have to go now!"
She helped him to his feet. He was shaky at first but after a few steps he steadied out.
They made it to the living room. Then the door. Then the yard.
Then... Their luck ran out.
Jason was back.
He pulled up and stepped out of the car.
"What the frick are you doing?"
They didn't answer.
"I'm gone for like 5 minutes and you decide that you're going to just leave?"
Kally stood her ground.
"We're leaving Jason!"
"The hell you are!"
She felt so afraid she almost backed down. She glanced back at Dakota. The feverish boy swayed on his feed and watched with tired eyes.
His entire body was coted in a sheen of sweat.
He was so sick.
They couldn't stay.
"We are leaving Jason. You can't stop us!"
He glared at her.
"Yes I can."
He grabbed her by the shoulders and threw her to the ground.
"I can make you stay so long as I have the kid."
Wall Kally recovered her feet he grabbed at Dakota. The boy had never fought back. Not really. He had struggled from time to time but never really fought. He had always been afraid. But now Dakota was much more afraid of going back into the closet than he was of his father.
He twisted away and shoved his father back.
"Stop!" Dakota yelled.
He had never raised his voice at anyone before.
Jason's blood boiled.
"Oh I don't think so you little bitch! Don't tell me what to do. Your not leaving!"
He grabbed for the boy again. Dakota hit him right in the face.
It wasn't to hard. For one he wasn't very strong and for two he was sick. But he hit the man hard enough to stun him.... And then enrage him.
Kally watched events unfolding.
She couldn't stop him.
She was too weak again.
She watched as Jason tackled her son. Dakota couldn't dodge it. The rolled in the ground. Dakota was fighting back now but she knew he couldn't win. He was too small.
She should help. But she wasn't big enough either.  But she had to try.
All these thoughts went through her mind in a split second.
She got up, ran over, wrapped her arms around Jason's neck, and pulled back.
He reached up and grabbed her hair dragging her around and throwing her to the ground again beside her son.
Then he hit her hard.
Jason hadn't hit her in years. He had always used Dakota to control her. Her vision swam. But he hit her again and again.
She couldn't do it.
She had failed.
She wasn't strong enough to save her son.

He was hitting his mom. A rage rose inside Dakota that he wasn't sure he had felt before.
He grabbed his father and they began to grapple.
"You think your all big and strong now?"
Jason asked when he pinned the boy.
"You can't win Cody."
SLAP
"Your too weak"
SLAP
"And pathetic. I mean come on kid!"
Fist to the gut.
"You ruin everything and you know it!"
He continued to insult and berate the boy as he threw blow after blow.
Dakota couldn't remember a time he had been beaten this badly. Then again. It wasn't over yet.
Then he heard the most beautiful sound.
"Police! Step away from the boy!"
