They stood at separate ends of the table, but he could have sworn he could still hear her heartbeat as though she stood next to him. He could hear it over Kono and Chin explaining their recent case, and he could hear it over Danny's undending innuendoes.
He watched her grip the edge of the table tightly with her hands, her knuckles going white, as Kono brough the crime scene photos up on the plasma. He could just about feel her heartbeat quicken. Colour slowly drained from her face, not enough for anybody else to notice, but enough for him.
Her chest rose as she took a deep breath in, trying to settle her stomach, but he knew that it was not helping her. He had been hesitant about her continuing on cases, but she pushed, she always pushed. She did not want to feel like a set-back for the team that never had wanted her there to begin with; she still felt that need to prove herself through anything even though she had proved herself enough.
"Lori, are you okay? You look a bit green," Danny's voice interrupted Steve's train of thought, and his eyes flicked up from her barely showing stomach to her face.
She nodded, keeping her mouth closed and her lips in a tight line. Her eyes met his and he knew exactly what was wrong.
"It's to your five o'clock," Steve told her simply as he slowly took a step in her direction.
Her body flung in an almost circle, the blonde just about diving towards the small bin the sat just outside of Danny's office. He moved quicker towards her, pulling her hair from the sides of her face as she hurled her stomach contents into the small bin.
"I told you that you should have stayed home," he whispered, dropping a kiss to her forehead as she stopped.
"It's just morning sickness Steve, it doesn't matter," she replied softly, regretting opening her mouth as she moved towards the bin again.
Steve looked up, shaking his head in spite of himself, before looking to the team.
"Should I be saying congratulations?" Danny smirked, feeling smug about himself as he put a hand out towards Kono who hesitantly handed twenty-dollars over to him.
"You can do that while you pass me the tissue box," his partner replied, rolling his eyes.
"Kono lost their bet, didn't she?" Lori asked in a whispered, laughing slightly.
The man crouched at her side only chuckled, and she had the answer she needed.
"I call dibs on being the Godmother," Kono told them, passing the box to Steve that she had been handed, and the pair only smiled.
