My fingers hovered over the keyboard, but they can't manage to press any of the keys. After staring at the laptop screen for over five minutes, with still just an empty word document, I finally let out a sigh and close the window. I have been cramped up in this hot apartment for over two hours already, looking for a job online, but no luck - once again. A catchy ringtone suddenly filled the silent air and I immediately jump up to go get my phone from the island counter.
"Hey Tiff!"
"Hey Rose! So how've you been? Any luck getting a new job?" her voice squealing with excitement. I knew something was up. She wasn't the type to call just to say hi; there was always a reason behind it.
"Well, not really. I mean I did search for some...and I did find several job openings..." I trailed off. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I knew finding an available job opening was already lucky enough and that I should jump at it while I can, but I just couldn't find the guts to press the stupid SEND button already.
"-but you didn't like them?" Tiffany sighed, knowing her best friend all too well.
"Well yeah..."
"Come on Rose! You know you have to do them if you want to keep the apartment! I mean your rent payment is due in I don't know, three weeks right? Whether you like it or not, you got to do it!"
"Well, gosh, now you just sound like my mom..." I sighed. "Well enough about me; what've you been up to lately?"
"Umm, okay, so...I've been reading this thrilling novel lately...'The Aspen Unfairytale' by Luca Brent."
"Oh. So...do you like it?" I've heard of this book before. Many, many times. I've even read it actually - just a few months ago.
"It's so good, really good actually. I like how it's very detailed. I'm kinda sorta addicted to it! Have you read it yet?"
"Have I read it?! Of course I have Tiff! You know I've read every single Luca Brent book there is!" I exclaimed. Though now that I think of it, he's only published two books. This and another one called 'Under the Paradise Sun.' But that one wasn't as well-known as 'The Aspen Unfairytale.'
"Um, what I particularly meant was, 'have you read the first page yet'?" her giggles were starting to creep in. I could just feel it.
"Yes," I begin. "And I know where you're going with this. You're talking about the dedication page, aren't you?" I raised an eyebrow, though I know she wouldn't even be able to see it.
"OMG! YES! HOW DID YOU KNOW? MY GAWD, I'VE BEEN DYING TO TELL YOU THAT THIS WHOLE TIME! I MEAN...LIKE....IT'S TOTALLY FOR YOU! I MEAN WHO ELSE IN THIS WORLD HAS A HEART ON HER PINKIE?!"
"Umm, well there's -"
"With pink hair, I should add! I mean I literally know NO ONE with that combination!" she exclaimed, then adding, "And I know lots people so that's saying a lot!"
It was true. Tiffany did know a lot of people. She's got 31,000 followers on Twitter, 17,268 subscribers on YouTube, and 579 friends on Facebook. She's somehow even Ryan Seacrest's personal friend. I don't even know how that girl does it.
"How long have you known this and why didn't you tell me?! I would've totally read it sooner and then have more time to fall in love with it!" she demanded.
"Quite a while actually, 'round a year I guess."
"And why didn't you tell me about it?" She just wouldn't let it go, would she?
I groaned. She was most definitely not helping me with this find-a-new-job-so-you-can-keep-your-apartment task. "Because I know you'd get all excited and perky and bubbly, like you are now, and you'd probably insist I go see the author and clarify if this book is actually dedicated to me or not? Plus, a lot of people have been coming up to me lately, and talking about how the book is, I quote, 'my fate and that the author somehow met me before and is reaching out to me'. You know I hate that fantasy shi*, Tiff."
"Yeah well true there. But," she said, her 'but' an octave higher. I groaned again. Whenever Tiffany did that, it meant she had come up with one of her brilliant plans or ideas. And by brilliant, I mean absolutely horrible.
"...but?"
"But you actually should go meet the author! I hear he lives in New York City, which is very convenient for us."
"Ugh! I knew it! So you!"
"But you know, Rose, I never actually did think of the go-meet-the-author-to-clarify-this idea. So that was totally you, hah!" she exclaimed on the other end of the phone, satisfied. "No but seriously, you should."
"Hah, for what? So I just come to wherever he lives, ask if the book is dedicated to me, he'll say yes or no, and then what? I'll probably just leave, obviously, and that's it. I swear Tiff, you have way too much time on your hands. I have to go find a job for heaven's sakes!"
"Yeah, but you know you could probably get him to sign your copy, right? That'd actually be pretty cool! Plus, all his meet-and-greets and book signings are always packed. You'd probably have to wait, I don't know, 4-5 hours just for his autograph."
"Well I guess that's pretty cool. But still. You don't expect me to do that, do you? Gosh, you are so crazy sometimes. You should write a book. Or help me find a job." I reminded her.
"Ugh, so sorry but I gotta go! Trust me, I'd love to help though!" And with that, she hung up. I suspected that it was just an excuse to get out of helping me find a new job, but I smiled anyways. She was so childish sometimes, but I guess that's what I love most about her.
