' you're not as smart as you think you are, you know that?'
Shilpa snapped through the chilling air of that odd December night. eleven o'clock at night, to be exact. Shilpa had her hands clasped to a vera bradley hand bag sitting on her hip in a comfortable position.
'oh yeah, well, I am smart,
sajna's heels clicked against the harsh pavement as the night continued to blanket the city with a rich chocolate sky and twinkling stars etched like sequins to that blanket.
'I know, I know I'm just kidding sanju.'
'well quit joking you stupid idiot,' sajna slapped at Shilpa's free arm which dangled lazily against her thigh. tumbling into a fit of giggles, grabbing her best friend's hand, they watched the taxi's briskly drive past them.
taxi's weren't easy to catch this late at night. of course sajna knew that, since she'd always be downtown until dusk most days, and find it incredibly hard to find someone to drive her home.
'how long have been walking sanju, i'm exhausted!'
'oh quit being so dramatic Shilpa! the subway is literally, what, two more minutes away,' sajna stared directly at her ticking watch latched around her wrist.
11:02, now 11:03. Shilpa couldn't enjoy the softness of the lights surrounding them, the gorgeous building lights being the ornaments to the sea of the sky. she was always in a hurry. a hurry to get away. maybe even in a hurry to get away from herself.
today had been the first day in years that Shilpa has so generously agreed to accompany sajna through the downtown in the three years that they'd both resided in the area, and even then, Shilpa's resistance was evident as she briskly dragged herself towards the subway gate.
'ay shilps, wait for me, I'm in heels for god sake,' sajna cried from the bottom of the stairs, taking her time to make sure her feet stayed within her thin, eight inch heels.
'goddamit sanju, lets go, it's going to be here any minute,' Shilpa tapped at the pavement, a blinding yellow paint keeping her from slipping off towards the tracks, which, sajna wouldn't be surprised if the subway security found her remains between the ridges of the tracks, considering her carelessness.
'god, i'm coming, just calm down! why are you in such a rush to leave? we were barely here, what, five hours?'
sajna stared down at her watch again, the reflection of the glossy glass blinding her. 11:07.
'yeah, five hours. I don't even like being out thirty minutes, okay! hurry up already, the next subway comes in like, 3 minutes?"
finally, reaching the top of the gum, dirt infested stairs, sajna scurried towards Shilpa, who continued to tap at the yellow line, the paint slowly chipping and eating at itself.
