The boy who answered the door turns out to be my cousin. His name was Mekhi where I've learned from Grandma Lyn when she had to cuss him out from trying to dip his finger into the cheese sauce for the Macaroni. She was making Sunday dinner which consisted of fried chicken, baked macaroni, greens, cornbread and homemade banana pudding.
"I'm about to eat good as fuck" I thought to myself.
"So Grandma Lyn is her mom the one that ran away?" Mekhi question sitting down next to me on one of the stools at the island in the kitchen.
"Ran away? That's not what my mom told me she said you kicked her out when she told you she was pregnant with me" I said with confusion written all over my face turning towards Mrs. Lyn.
Sitting the spatula down and grabbing the macaroni and placing the pan into the oven and turning towards us she wiped her hands on her apron and walked towards the island and rested her hands onto the counter top.
She took a breath before speaking "yes and no" answering Mekhi's question and my statement.
This caused me to be even more confuzzled.
"What do you mean yes and no can you tell us the truth?" I asked wanting to know the whole story.
" yes we have enough time to pass while the food is cooking" Mrs. Lyn said.
"Yay story time" expressed Mekhi with excitement.
"Oh boy shut up and listen," she said " it was the end of April when she told me" she started.
🦋 Spring of 2001 🦋 "Just take the pregnancy test already Athena your period probably just changed cycles and there's nothing to worry about" Natasha said trying to console her best friend since elementary school.
On the other hand Athena sat on the bathroom floor trying to keep herself from throwing up for the fourth time this morning. " I just know somethings wrong Natash I've been getting sick every morning" she said looking up at her best friend on the verge of tears.
"How about I take one also so you don't have to take it alone I'll go first" Natasha said while grabbing a pregnancy test pulling her pants down and sitting on the toilet.
Once she's done she wiped herself, put the cap back onto the pregnancy stick and sat it onto the the sink counter, and then walked to the sink proceeded to wash her hands. "Okay your turn" she said to Athena looking at her through the mirror "come on the sooner you take the test the faster you know that this is just all a big miss understanding" she finished turning around and pulling Athena up handing her a new test and leaving out the bathroom to go get some water.
Athena stared at herself in the mirror and tried to convince herself that she wasn't pregnant but she had the signs of pregnancy.
"Come on Athena you got this" she said " the test is going to be negative you and Natasha will laugh at this tomorrow" trying to convince herself. She walked to the toilet and took the test. Once finished she sat it on the other side of the sink counter so they wouldn't mix up the tests.
There was a knock on the door; it was Natasha asking her was she done. "Yea I'm done come in" she said " are you ready" Natasha said grabbing her test " on the count of 3".
"1...... 2........ 3..." they both said at the same time flipping the tests over.
"Negative" Natasha said.
"Positive" Athena said with tears falling from her eyes looking up at Natasha.
"Ohh Thena these tests always show the wrong answers all the time maybe we sho-" Natasha started but was cut off my Athena.
"Natash I'm pregnant I've been having the symptoms I just chose to ignore them" she said.
"What are you going to do? when are you going to tell your mom?" Natasha question.
"Tell me what? what y'all in here doing" said Mrs. Lyn said standing at the door. " What Is y'all in here doing?" She said again looking around but setting her eyes on the pregnancy test that was in Athena's hand. " What is this tell me this a fake" coming into the room and taking the stick from Athena seeing that it was positive.
Seeing that words was going to be exchanged Natasha thought it was time for her to go. So she grabbed all her things and told Athena she would see her later.
"Are you serious right now Athena your smarter then this" Mrs. Lyn said " you can't stay in my house you opened yo legs thinking you grown you gone take care of this baby like a grown ass woman. She said going to Athena's closet and grabbing her clothes putting them in the nearest bag she seen.
" no momma please" Athena said crying and pleading for her mom to let her stay. She was so scared of telling her mom what really happened thinking she wouldn't believe her so she didn't tell her. ————————————
Sitting there looking at Mrs. Lyn I can see she regretted dealing with the situation like that.
" I regretted doing what i did right after she left i called her to come back but she never answered " she said with a sigh " two weeks later when I was at church Pastor James came to me and told me that his son rapped my daughter I really regretted everything and tried and tried to search for your mother but I always came up empty until a few months ago when I got in contact with her through Natasha I seen her at the store and she told me she had your mother's numb-" she was going to finish but I stopped her once I heard Natasha that was Xavier's mom name from what I can remember.
" wait you said you seen Natasha?" I said with a shocked face.
"Yea do you know her?" She replied back with confusion.
"Oouu things is getting juicy" Mekhi said with amusement on his face leaning in more.
" yes she was my mom best friend she had a son then left him with us when I was 5 he was 10" I told her.
"Wow I never knew will back to the story I got in contact with her and we was planning for you and your mom to come down here to visit and work things out then this happens" she says tearing up " I just wanted to see my daughter" now with tears running down her face I got up and hugged her "it's okay I believe you" I said looking at Mekhi he got the hint and came to hug Mrs. lyn and I.
"This is going to be fun I always wanted a cousin that was around my age" Mekhi said while we let go of each other.
"Boy don't you be getting her in trouble" Mrs. Lyn said side eyeing him.
I think i'm going to start calling her Momma Lyn.
