CHAPTER ONE THRONE OF LIES
☾*☾*☾*☾*☾
LIFE QUICKLY COULD HAVE become boring after being alive for three and a half thousand years, thankfully, Valentina was experienced in keeping it interesting. The first thing she had learned as a vampire was to seize every opportunity in its most advantageous form. Muffled voices were coming from the Volturi Throne room and that spelt out one thing: entertainment. Had there been a serious breach of the law, her brother would have requested her presence and the lack of such most likely meant it was hazing for Aro's entertainment. As much as she despised her brother's ignorance of her strength and influence, their cruelty must have been genetic.
Valentina stalked the bordering corridors, feet always falling silent against the marble regardless of the tall stilettos adorning her feet, as she listened to her brother preening before his audience. She could imagine the smug smile spread across his translucent skin, it would make any lesser creature or human shiver in fear. The shadows were her friend, curving around her figure to mask Valentina from anyone's sight as she slipped into the room, hood falling forward to cover her features.
Perching on the arm of Aro's throne, she looked over the audience, there was a pale and gaunt human girl who was staring at her brother with unbridled fear. Beside her, was a smaller girl that reminded Valentina of a pixie, one thing about her that stood out was the golden eyes. She had only seen them on one vampire before: Carlisle Cullen — she must have been from his brood. Nearer to Aro, dressed in a dusty black coat, was another golden-eyed vampire with auburn hair and tall stature.
For the first time in three in a half millennium, there were eyes on Valentina when she didn't want them to be. The pixie-like vampire was staring at the throne with knowing eyes, they didn't fall directly on her which caused her to believe she couldn't truly see her.
"What have you seen Alice?" Her brother asked, his silky voice making her want to vomit on the spot. Valentina knew this girl, her brother had spoken of her with a hunger he kept for his most prized treasures, she was the vampire with foresight.
Averting her gaze, Alice turned back to Aro and shook her head, signalling that she had seen nothing. Whilst Valentina had taken interest in her, she had missed the way the auburn-haired vampire has tensed up before launching himself at Felix. A more sympathetic person would have winced, Felix was not one to be trifled with and if the vampire left with less than four broken bones, she would be surprised. Valentina had thought correctly, cracks were forming on his neck where Felix was squeezing tightly.
That wouldn't do, she thought — he and the other two were Valentina's route out of the castle she had built with so much love, she comforted herself with the reminder it was for her best interest and only temporary. She watched with fond eyes as the shadows that circled the ground beside her crept across the floor and lunges for Felix, makeshift hands attaching to him so she could pull him away. The large vampire turned around with red hot fury in his gaze, eyes flitting around the room to spot Valentina who he knew was behind it but they came up empty.
